Cheyne continues
|
As soon as Michael noticed Ricardo's leg moving, Ricardo didn't let any time go to waste. The minute Michael left, Ricardo, using the armrests of his wheelchair to push himself up, stood up for the first time since...what was it? July? Although it was a great effort for the stroke victim, it was a big step in the right direction. It was just unfortunate that when he tried to take a step, he fell to the floor. But that didn't stop him from trying. On Friday, he tried again, and he took his first step. "I'm doing it," he said. "I'm walking. And nobody knows, which means...I have Antonio and Gabi right where I want them. They're going to pay for what they've done...real soon." Hank Cheyne was spellbinding as Ricardo as he made a great effort to do something that most people do without even thinking. It must be especially painful for him and other stroke victims of similar situations, since he was able to walk freely not six months ago. You could simultaneously see the pain and the triumph in his face. It was hurting him terribly, but he wanted it so desperately that he was willing to withstand it. I loved how he reached for the nearest object when he took his first step; I felt it added an odd and realistic touch, as one practically regresses to infancy in every way but mentally when hit by a stroke of this fashion. One can't help but wonder if Cheyne has talked with an actual stroke victim to get all the little things so perfectly. It was a short moment, indeed, but a pivotal one. This is what really begins his revenge on his brother and wife. And if he's this determined to walk, I cannot wait to see what he cooks up for those two.
