Character: Uncle Tobias and (Finally--Halleleujah!) Gregory Richards Performer of the Week: Nov. 22-26, 1999 | |
WHO IS THAT MASKED MAN? Sam Behrens was a lot of fun this week as we learned (not through reading or theory, but sight and sound) that Gregory really IS doddering old Uncle Tobias. After an entertaining monologue about how Annie and Olivia's lives have been shot to Hell, he smiled smugly in the mirror and his teeth slid out. Then followed the rest of the getup. (And let me tell you, I am glad that nose is prosthetic. It looks so real that I thought it was his real nose, and I wouldn't want it being that big for no good reason.) When he peeled off that mustache and fake nose and pulled off the wig, I felt like jumping out of my seat. I don't know why; I (heck, all of us) always knew that he was Gregory, but I guess there was something about having it shown to us on-camera, knowing that we really had dastardly Gregory back. It's about time, I say; things weren't as fun without him. It's been great seeing Sam get to be funny (he's very good at it!), but I hope we get Gregory back full-time for a few weeks before the last episode. You know, it's funny. I read in SOW that Behrens had wanted to do a dual role for a while now, and that when they decided that he was going to be brought back from "the dead" as the other character, they ran through several possibilities. At one point, he said, they had him playing a black woman. I don't know what that would have been like, but I'd pay good money just to see a picture of him in costume! (Hearing the voice would be hilarious, too, though!)
