Chapter 10

Jessi sat at the table with her mother and Julia. Her thoughts drifted
back to the present and she listened to her mother. She was trying to
get into a conversation on what she did at school or what she wanted to
do tomorrow. She was saying something about going on a boat trip for
the day with her cousin Michael, Aunt Caroline and Uncle AJ. She had to
admit to herself that a boat trip sounded fun. She muttered, “Sure.”
Her mother smiled at her. Obviously grateful that she had decided to
say a word at all. Then her mother asked her if she would feel better
if they went home early. They could leave a message for Jason to meet
them at the house instead of here. This set Jessi off. She had been so
quiet all night, and now all her pain, confusion, and anger got the
better of her. She started yelling at her mom.
J: “You want to know if I would feel better at home or here?! What’s
the difference?! I would still have you hovering around me at every
move I make! Why can’t you leave me alone?! I’ll be fine, just leave
me alone!” Jessi was standing out of her chair by now. She looked
around and everyone in the restaurant was looking at her. She couldn’t
take everyone’s pity anymore. She had to get out of the room. She ran
towards the back. Brenda called after her, but Jessi ignored her.

She ran all the way to the back door and outside. She didn’t get very
far before a gust of wind mixed with cold hard rain blew chased her back
inside. She headed for the kitchen, maybe the cook would let her help
him. She stopped at the door. She wasn’t allowed in there during
operating hours, because it got too crowded with workers scurring to get
food ready for the customers. She turned around and saw the closed door
of Luke’s office. She didn’t know what, but something was telling her
she had to go in there. It should be empty. Luke and Lucky were out
front and Jessi hadn’t seen Jason all night so she doubted he was in
there. She quickly opened the door. Shut it. Put her back against it
and sank to the floor crying. She wrapped her hands around her legs,
bowed her head and buried it in her knees. She was oblivious to the
fact that three grown men and a bodyguard (obviously he needs to freshen
up his skills if he can’t stop a nine-year old girl from barging in) in
the corner were staring at her intently.

Jason sees the little girl on the ground. He has no idea what is going
on with her, but something definitely was not right. He had to find out
what was wrong and get her out of the office before she noticed that her
father was in the room. That was something that none of them needed
right now. When and if Sonny found out about Jessi it should be from
Brenda. If Brenda would even find out about Sonny, Jason didn’t even
know. Why and how long was Sonny here for? And where had he been?
These were answers Jason could get later, he needed to take care of
Jessi right now.
Ja: Walks over to her and puts his hand on her shoulder and gently
shakes her. “Jessi, are you okay?”
J: She looks at him and shakes her head no
Ja: “What’s wrong?”
J: “Everything.”
Ja: “Things can’t be that bad, do you want talk about it?”
J: Shakes her head no, but wraps her arms around Jason and cried on
his shoulder.
Ja: Pulled her into a tight hug and hoped she didn’t notice the people
behind him. “Everything will be okay, Jessi. You know you can tell me
anything.”
J: Continues to hug Jason. She is crying less now. She looks up and
sees that there are other people in the room. She pulls away from Jason,
and puts her hand on the doorknob and slowly turns it. “Jase, I’m sorry,
I didn’t realize you had people in here. I’ll go….” She finally
recognizes Sonny. As she opens the door, she screams. She looks at
Jason and whispers, “Am I seeing a ghost?” Jason, who still can’t lie
straight out, reluctantly nods his head no, she wasn’t. This is too
much for Jessi to handle. As she walks backwards out of the room, she
feels dizzy and stumbles to the floor, hitting her head twice as she
goes down. Once on the door and again on the floor. She lays
unconscious on the floor as Jason desperately tries to wake her. The
Jason Q in him knows it’s not going to happen so he yells at Renaldo to
call 911.

Brenda was nervously twisting and untwisting her napkin. Lois, Julia,
and Laura were telling her that Jessi would come back when she wanted.
She needed time to be alone. Brenda knew that, but she still worried.
It wasn’t like she didn’t know where Jessi was. Julia had reminded her
that there were only three places in the back that Jessi would be, and
only one was available at the moment. It was too wet to go outside, she
wasn’t allowed in the kitchen, so she must be in the office. It took
all her willpower to stay in her chair and not go after her daughter.
Her mind told her to stay, but her heart was telling her she must go to
the office now. She had a feeling she was being pulled there, but it
wasn’t because her daughter was there. It was the same feeling she used
to get anytime Sonny was around. Maybe his spirit was around trying to
help her and Jessi get through this crisis. God, she hoped so, she
needed all the help she could get. Her thoughts were interrupted by a
child’s scream coming from the back. That was Jessi’s scream. Brenda
got up and ran to the back, she got their in time to hear Jason yell at
Renaldo to call 911. She looked on the ground to see her baby lifeless
on the floor. She immediately dropped to the floor to kneel beside her
as she felt her heart race a million beats a minute and a look of terror
shot across her face.
B: “Jason, what happened?” She asked in a panic as she gently ran her
hand across Jessi’s face in hopes that a simple touch would wake her.
It didn’t.
J: “She fainted, fell and hit her head.” Jason answered as he checked
Jessi’s pulse and breathing. He was relieved when he found them both.
They were weak, but they were there. He took his jacket off and wrapped
it around her tiny body to keep her warm.
B: “Jason, she has to be okay. She has to be.” Brenda was hysterical
and frantic now. She had taken one of Jessi’s hands and was rubbing it
between her hands. “Come on Jessi, wake up. Show mama your pretty
eyes. Come on Jessi. Please wake up.” Brenda looked at Jason who
reassured her that Jessi was breathing and had a heart beat. “This is
my fault. I knew she couldn’t handle the truth. Jason, I told her, but
she couldn’t handle it.” She went back t holding Jessi’s hand, with
only one hand this time. Her other hand tenderly removes hair from
Jessi’s face that had fallen in her eyes. She keeps pleading at Jessi
to wake up.
J: “Brenda, have hope. This isn’t your fault. These things happen.
She’ll be okay.” Though deep in his gut, Jason wasn’t so sure. “You
told her the truth today?”
B: Brenda momentarily looked up. “Yeah, I was forced to.”
J: Sighed. “Today probably wasn’t the best day to tell her that.”
B: “Why?” Before Jason answers, Brenda takes a good look around the
room. “Sonny? Clive?”
They both nod yes.
In the background, the roar of sirens is heard.

Chapter 11

Sonny watched as the terrifying scene unfolded in front of him. The
girl in the picture that Jason had called Jessi had come barging in.
She seemed very upset as she curled herself into a ball on the floor.
His heart went out to her as he watched Jason try to ease her pain.
Something made the girl scream and faint. He wasn’t sure what, but he
hoped she was okay. When the child’s mother came into the room, his
heart about stopped. It was Brenda. His Brenda. She had a daughter.
She probably had a husband and many kids by now. He was probably a
distant memory for her. Wait, what was he doing feeling sorry for
himself? Brenda’s daughter was in trouble. He wanted to help, but he
had no idea what he could do. And when Brenda looked up and her eyes
met his eyes, he couldn’t move or speak. She looked so beautiful. He
could only nod an answer to her question. She looked so scared that all
he wanted to do was to go to her and pull her into his arms and tell her
everything was going to be fine. His mind was telling him not to, she
doesn’t need her life complicated right now. He heard the roar of the
sirens in the background.

Luke, Laura, Lois, Ned, and Julia entered the scene. They say Jessi,
Jason, and Brenda on the floor. They tried to hover around thinking
they were helping, but Jason yelled at them to stay back, the EMTs
needed to get in.

Brenda had gone back to pleading with Jessi. She knew that she had just
saw her dead husband and her forever disapearing uncle, but her mind
wouldn’t let her deal with it right now. She needed to deal with her
daughter. She was aware that her friends had joined her in the hall,
but she didn’t talk to them, not even when Julia leaned down to try to
comfort her. She barely noticed. She watched as the EMTs strapped
Jessi onto the gurney and wheeled her to the ambulance. As she climbed
in after Jessi, Jason told her that they would meet them at the
hospital. “Sonny, too?” She asked. “Yeah, Sonny, too” He answered.
The ambulance doors shut and they headed to the hospital.

Jason walked back into the club. He felt like he was in the twilight
zone. Everything that was the unexpected happened today. He wasn’t too
surprised when he walked back into the offiice to see Lois
hyperventilating, Ned trying to calm her down, Julia glaring daggers
through her eyes at Sonny, and Luke hugging Sonny and Laura getting
emotional about the whole deal. What he would give right now for some
of Robin’s advice.
J: “Everyone listen up. I promised Brenda we would meet her at the
hospital. I’m leaving now, so I guess I’ll meet whoever comes there.
Sonny, she specifically asked that you come to.”
S: “She did? I’ll leave with you, then.”
Ju: “Someone tell me what is going on. Why isn’t that man dead? And
what happened to my niece?”
J: “Jessi, fainted, fell and hit her head. As for Sonny, ask him. At
this point I don’t care. There’s a little girl in the hospital that
needs her family.
Lu: “Jason, Sonny you go on ahead. We’ll meet you when we can.” Jason
and Sonny leave. Clive and Renaldo follow behind them. “ Lois, Ned
I’ll see if Lucky and Emily can watch Brooke, Eddie, Lu and Lindsey.
Julia do you need a ride to the hospital?”
Ju: “Yeah, I came with Brenda and I don’t have a key to her car.”
Lu: “Fine you can come with us.”
Lois who is breathing normally now, thanks Luke,a nd goes to find Brooke
to tell her what is going on. Ned follows her.
Laura goes to find Lucky to explain the situation. He agrees to do all
he can to help.
Julia goes to gather Brenda and Jessie’s coats and Brenda’s purse.
Luke, alone in the office reaches for the phone. He dials a number.
The other end answers, “Recovery Room, Mike speaking.”
Lu: Mike it’s Luke.
M: Recognizes the seriousness of Luke’s voice. “What’s wrong Luke?”
Lu: “You need to get to the hospital quick. Jessi was just rushed
there.”
M: “What? What happened?”
Lu: “I’m not sure. She fell or something. She left here unconscious.”

M: “I’ll be there as soon as I can. Tell Brenda that everything will
be fine, and that I’ll be there as soon as I get this place closed.”
Lu: “There’s something else that you need to know.”
Luke was too late. Mike, in a panic to get to the hospital, had
already hung up the phone.

At the hospital Brenda is pacing the waiting area by the ER. She was
relieved that Bobbie was the nurse on duty so that Jessi would have
someone in there that she knew. As she was pacing someone came up
behind her and put their hands on her shoulders. The electricity of the
touch startled her and she turned around to face Sonny. She knew he
was really there, but it seemed so unreal. She wanted answers, but
later when she didn’t feel like falling apart at any minute. Her dream
and her nightmare had come true in less than an hour. Her world was
spinning out of control and she didn’t know what to do. Right now she
just wanted to feel his strong arms around her body giving her strength
to get through this crisis.
S: “Brenda, I…..”
B: Interrupted him. “Sonny, shhh. Just hold me, please.”
Sonny wrapped his arms around Brenda, who in turn leaned into him. He
wrapped his arms tighter around her as she started to cry. They were
cries of sorrow and joy. Sonny let her tears fall as her grip on him
got tighter. They both knew that it felt so right being in each other
arms, but they couldn't forget the world around them. Brenda worried
about her daughter, and Sonny worried about Brenda and her daughter.
Brenda looked up at Sonny with tears in her eyes and said, “I’m sorry
Sonny, I didn’t mean to hurt her.”

Chapter 12

Sonny is still holding Brenda in his arms. Jason and Clive are standing
on opposite ends of the waiting room. The rest of the gang hasn’t
arrived yet.
S: Looked down at Brenda. “Brenda, it’s not you fault that she is in
the hospital. I’m sure she knows that.”
B: “No, you don’t understand. She’s been mad at me all afternoon. I
told her the truth today. That’s why she went running off into the
office. If I didn’t tell her she wouldn’t have run off and she wouldn’t
have fainted, and she wouldn’t have fallen and she wouldn’t be here.”
S: “Brenda stop blaming yourself. What truth, could you have possibly
told her that would upset her so badly?”
B: “You. I told her about you. She already knew about you, but she
didn’t know your business or how you died or whatever it was that
happened to you. It scared her.”
S: “Brenda, I don’t understand why you would tell your daughter about
me. Why frighten her about details of your past that don’t have
anything to do with her?”
B: Steps out of his embrace and looks at him. He didn’t know. How
could he not know? Jessi was the spitting image of him. Didn’t Jason
tell him? She looked around for Jason. She saw him in the corner.
They made eye contact, and Jason came over. “You didn’t tell him?”
J: “No, I thought you should.”
S: “Tell me what? What aren’t you telling me?”
B: Takes his hand and leads him to a nearby chair. “You might want to
sit down for this.” He sits down in the chair and looks at Brenda
questioningly. “I told Jessi about you because she wanted to know about
her father. You’re her father, Sonny.”
S: Sonny looked like a he had been hit by truck. He felt like it
too. Had he heard right? Brenda’s daughter was his also. That
explained why he felt the need to know this girl. He was a father of a
what, …he didn’t eve know how old she was, probably nine, ten, he didn’t
know.
B: Sonny hadn’t said anything and she was getting worried. “Sonny, say
something, please.”
S: “She’s mine?”
B: Smiles, “Yeah.”
The ER doctor comes out of the ER.
Dr.: “Mrs. Corinthos?”
Brenda turns around to face the doctor. Everyone else looks at him
expectantly.
B: “Jessi, my daughter, how is she?”
DR. “She’s awake. She has a slight concussion. I want to keep her
here for a couple of days to make sure she is going to be fine.”
B: “Can I go see her?”
Dr. “For a few minutes. Only one visitor at a time and don’t upset
her.
B: “Okay.” She turned Sonny. “Sonny I’ll be right back.” She headed
to the go see Jessi.

*******************************************************************************************

Sonny looks at Jason.
S: “Why didn’t you tell me earlier?”
J: “Number one I thought you needed to hear it from Brenda. Number two
I don’t know your plans. If you’re only dropping into town for a little
while, I didn’t think it would be a good idea for you to get attached to
Jessi and then have to leave. It’s hard to say goodbye to a kid. I
know that first hand.”
S: “I’m plan on staying for a very long time. This is my home. What
do you mean by saying goodbye to a child is hard. You have kids?”
J: “No. I had one in my care for awhile, though. I’ll tell you about
it later.”
S: “You better. Tell me about Jessi. What is she like?”
J: “She’s a great kid..”
Clive decides to interrupt here.
C: “Bren told me that she can be very stubborn at times, but has a
heart of gold.”
Jason and Sonny look at Clive like he is crazy.
J: “Clive, this has been bugging me since we were at Luke’s. How do
you know Brenda?”
C: “She’s my niece.”
S: “She’s your what? She never talked about you. And why didn’t you
ever tell me. I take it you knew about my daughter too.”
C: “Yeah I knew. Ben and I don’t keep in contact much. I send her a
card here and there, and she sends me letter every now and then to the
FBI where they forward them to wherever I am at the time. As for not
telling you that was information you didn’t need yet.
S: “I didn’t need to know? I have a daughter and you didn’t think I
needed to know? Why? I want to know now.”
C: “We needed you away from Brenda to finish the assignment. If you
knew you had a kid you would have gone home, putting everyone in
danger.”
S: “Yeah, I would have gone home. I could have taken my family and put
them in to protection also.”
C: “And take them form their home? Put them at even more risk than
they were at home? I don’t think they needed that.”
S: “I could have kept them safe. My daughter didn’t need to grow up
without a father.”
C: “Jessi didn’t need to grow up running from the Puerto Rican mob
that wanted to kill her father.”
Sonny and Clive are standing face to face yelling at each other. People
are staring at them. Jason intevenes.
J: “You two, we are in a hospital. If you want to finish this
conversation go outside, or else you retreat to separate corners.”
S: “Fine, this conversation is finished for now, but it’s far from
over.” With that he walks away from Clive and heads closer to the ER to
wait for Brenda to find out about Jessi.

******************************************************************************************

Mike was the first of the family/friends to arrive since his place of
business was only a block away from the hospital. He didn’t see Sonny.
He searched for someone he recognized. He found Jason.
M: “How is she Jason?”
J: “Jessi or Brenda?”
M: “Jessi, well both.”
J: “Jessi is awake and Brenda’s with her now. Brenda feels guilty
about the whole thing. She told Jessi about Sonny today, which made
Jessi very upset.”
M: “Poor Brenda. This isn’t her fault. Jessi’s going to be okay,
right?”
J: “As far as we can tell right now, yeah.”
M: “Where is everyone?”
J: “I assume that Luke, Laura, Ned, Lois, and Julia are on their way.
Sonny’s over there by the ER.”
M: “What? Sonny’s where? Mike turned around to see Sonny standing by
the ER, jaw clenched and hands running through his hair. “Michael?”

*****************************************************************

Chapter 13

Bobbie is in with Jessi when Brenda walks in. They are deep in
converstion.
J: “Grandma, you believe me, don’t you?”
Bo: “Sweetie I believe you think you saw your Daddy, but honey, he’s
not coming back.”
J: “I did see him, Jason saw him too.”
Bo: Sighs, knowing that children often see things they want to see that
aren’t really there. “Jessi…”
B: “Bobbie, she’s right. Sonny’s here. He’s out in the waiting room.”

J: “I told you Grandma.”
B: “Jessi, don’t talk to your grandmother like that.”
Bo: Turns to look at Brenda. “He’s here? You mean in spirit, right?”
B: “No, I mean he’s here, alive and breathing out in the waiting room.”

Bo: “”What? Where has he been? Does he know we thought he was dead?
Does Mike know? Or Caroline?”
B: “I don’t have the answers to any of those questions, sorry. I was
too worried about Jessi here to find out anything.”
Bo: “Of couse. I’ll leave the two of you alone for a few minutes.
We’re moving her into a room by herself pretty soon. I have to find
Mike. He definitely needs to be here. And Caroline. “ She gets up and
scurries out of the room on a mission to find her husband to tell him
about his son and grandaughter.
B: Walks over to Jessi. Takes her hand and smiles. “You gave us quite
a scare Jessi.”
J: “ I didn’t mean to. I feel okay now.”
B: “You look better to, but the doctor says you have to stay a few days
so he can make sure you really are okay.”
J: “I have to stay here? I don’t want to. You said we were going on a
boat trip tomorrow.”
B: “Jessi you have to follow doctor’s orders. The boat trip can be
rescheduled. I’ll stay here with you the whole time, okay.”
J: “It’s only for a few days, right?”
B: “Yeah, and I’ll let you miss some school..”
J: “I have to be in here until Monday. (note this is still Friday. I
don’t remember if I ever specified the day.)
B: “No, only until Sunday morning, but I want you to rest on Monday.”
J: “I can watch cartoons all day?”
B: “If that’s want you want.”
J: “I guess it will be okay to stay here. Brooke and Lu will visit
right, right?”
B: “If their parents let them, yeah I’m sure they will.”
Jessi and Brenda sit in silence for a couple of minutes. Brenda is
trying to figure out how to bring up Sonny without upsetting Jessi.
She’s not sure if Jessi wants to see him or not. Jessi on the other
hand is also trying to how to bring up the topic of her father. She’s
not sure what she wants from him, just that she wants at least see him
again. Finally Brenda breaks the silence.
B: “Jessi, you know your father is outside.”
J: “I know you already told Grandma that. Does he want to see me?”
B: Although Brenda hadn’t gotten into a lengthy conversation with Sonny
about Jessi, she knew he wanted to see her badly. His eyes had said
everything when the realization had sunk in. “Yeah, Jessi he wants to
see you.”
J: “Will he like me?”
B: “Of course he will, why do you think he won’t?”
J: “I don’t know. I don’t know if I like him. He’s a little scary.”
B: Sighs. At least Jessi wanted to see Sonny, but she didn’t want her
to be afraid of him. How would Sonny react if his daughter didn’t want
to talk to him because she was scared of him? Maybe she would just let
Sonny deal with it. After all it has been his choice to live a life of
crime. “Jessi, I know he seems a little scary because of what he does,
but he’s really not that bad if you know him. Talk to him about why
your scared of him. I’m sure he can or will at least try to explain
himself to you. Okay?”
J: “Okay..”
A nurse comes in to interrupt.
N: “I’m sorry to intrude, but we need to get Jessi to her own room.”
B: Gets up and turns to the nurse. “Okay, I’ll be out in just a
moment.” The nurse nods in understandment, and walks out of the room.
Brenda turns back to Jessi. “Jessi , I’ll see you after they move you,
okay.”
J: “Okay. When you come back, bring Daddy.”
B: Smiles. “I sure will. He’ll be happy to see you.”

**************************************************************************************

Jason and Mike are in the waitning area. Mike has just seen Sonny.
Sonny hasn’t seen him yet. Bobbie will be coming out of ER to look for
Mike soon.
J: “Yeah, that’s really him over there. .Sorry didn’t mean for it to
become such a shock for you. I thought someone would have told you by
now.”
M: “When did he show up? How and why is he here? Where has he been?”
J: “He showed up this evening. Anything else, I don’t know. Only him
and the FBI agent in the corner, who also happens to be Brenda’s uncle,
seem to know the details.”
M: “FBI? Uncle? What has he gotten himself into?”
J: “I don’t’ know.”
M: “Has he seen Jessi yet?”
J: “He saw her for a couple of seconds before she fainted. Her seeing
him probably caused her to faint He didn’t know who she was at the
time. Brenda just told him about ten minutes ago.”
M: “How is Brenda handling all this?”
J: “She’s okay with it for now. She hasn’t asked any questions yet. I
think she’s avoiding dealing with Sonny until she knows Jessi will be
okay. I don’t know what will happen when he explains this mess to us.”
M: “How is he dealing?”
J: “I’m not sure. Go talk to him.”
M: “Yeah, I think I will.”
Mike goes over to Sonny who is pacing a 2ft. strip of floor.
M: “Michael?”
S: Sonny turns around. He smiles but his eyes are full of worry.
“Dad.” He hugs Mike. “Man, I’ve missed you.”
M: They both have tears in their eyes now. “I’ve missed you too.
Where have you been?”
S: “All over the place. Puerto Rico, South America, North America.
Anyplace in the Western Hemisphere, I’ve probably been there.”
M: “Why?”
Before Sonny can answers, Bobbie comes out of ER. She sees Sonny and
Mike.
S: “Bobbie, how is Jessi?”
B: “Sonny, wow it is you. They told me you were out here, but it
didn’t really sink in. Jessi should be fine. They’re going to be
moving her to another room soon.” She turns to Mike. “I see you have
your son back. I was just on my way to call you. Have you spoken to
Caroline yet?”
M: “No. Why don’t you go call her.” Bobbie give Mike a kiss on the
cheek and leave Mike and Sonny alone.
S: Raises his eybrows. “Something going on between the two of you?
And who’s Caroline?”
M: Shows Sonny the ring around his finger. “Bobbie and I got married
about five years ago. Caroline is our daughter. You might have known
her as Carly Roberts.”
S: “Wow. Who’d have guessed you and Luke’s sister. Do you mind
explaining Caroline, I don’t quite follow you.”
The gang has arrived now. Luke comes up to them.
L: “You don’t explain my niece Sonny. There’s no point she’s a Spencer
through and through. Has anyone ever been able to explain me?”
S: Laughs. “I wouldn’t even try to, Luke.”
L: “So how’s Jessi?”
Brenda walks out of the ER and hears Luke.
B: “She’s okay for now. They’re moving her to a room now.”
S: Looks at Brenda. “Can I see her soon?”
B: “Yeah, but she might not respond very well to you. She’s kind of
scared of you right now.”
S: “She’s willing to see me, right.” Brenda nods yes. “It’s a start
and I guess it will have to do.”
