Chapter 19 Later that night the surprise party was about over. Jason was the only one left at the house. He and Sonny are sitting in the living room talking. J: “I told you Jessi was a great kid. She adores you.” S: “So you think so? I know I think the world of her.” Brenda walks into the room. She had just checked up on Jessi who had fallen asleep in Brenda’s bed while watching a movie with all the other kids at the party. She was so peaceful lying there that Brenda left her there. B: “She definitely adores you, Sonny.” They both turn to Brenda. B: “Can’t you tell just by the way she looks at you? You’d think you were a king by the way she looks at you.” S: Dimples flashing, smirkingly he says, “Oh really? A king huh? I’ll have to remember that one.” B: exasperated, but kind of liking his teasing her, “Soooony.” S: Gets up and wraps his arms around Brenda from behind. He rests his chin on her shoulder. “No really, I do see it but it scares the hell out of me every time I see that loving adoring look in her eyes. I’m afraid I’m dreaming. There’s no way this perfect little girl could love me. I don’t deserve it, but there she is contradicting everything I believe about myself.” B: With a few tears in her eyes. “Sonny don’t believe that. You have every right to be loved by your daughter. You can’t stop her from loving you. She loves so freely, don’t ever shut that out.” S: “I don’t ever intend to, Brenda, it just amazes me so much.” B: “She is amazing, isn’t she?” Jason clears his throat. Obviously he’s been long forgotten by now. J: “I’ll think I’ll leave you two alone, now.” B: “Are you sure it’s safe to go back to you apartment yet?” J: “Yeah. Thanks for letting me stay here.” B: “No problem.” Jason leaves. S: “It’s probably about time I got going too.” B: Turns around in his arms so she is looking into his eyes. “Where do you think you’re going?” S: “Well my stuff is at the apartment above Luke’s” B: “What’s it doing there and not here?” S: Dimples. “You want me to stay here?” B: “Of course I do. We’re still married, if you remember.” S: “Oh I remember. It’s just that you weren’t exactly talking to me so I had my stuff put above Luke’s” B: “You can get your things in the morning. You’re staying here tonight.” She inches closer to his face. S: Dimples are really flashing now. “I’m not?” He answers mockingly. She smiles and shakes his head no as he takes his hands from around her waist and cradles her face in them. He whispers, “ I love you” before pulling her face to his for a passionate kiss. It was gentle and tender at first, but it grew more intense as it continued. Brenda felt more alive then she had in years. As his sweet, fiery kiss burned her mouth, her heart filled with happiness. She didn’t want this feeling to end. Neither of them did. They had ten years to bake up. Finally they both broke away breathless. S: Pulla her close to him Whispered in her ears. “I’ve waited a long time to do that, baby. It was better than any kiss I can remember.” B: “It was better than any I can remember too, honey.” She starts to cry a little. “Sonny do you know how much it tore me apart when I realized I was never going to feel your lips on mine, or how your body felt against mine, or the way I feel when you look at me that certain way again?” S: “I know, baby, I know. I felt the same way. Shhhh. It’s okay. I’m not going anywhere.” He wiped the tears from her face and held her close until she stopped crying. B: When she finally stopped crying she looked at Sonny. “I love you, you know.” S: “I know” and he pulled her into another passionate, soul burning kiss. They broke away, breathless again. Brenda pulled away and started up the stairs. S: “Hey, baby where are you going?” B: Turrns around. “I’m going to sleep. Care to join me?” S: “Just sleep?” B: “Sorry, honey but just sleep. At least for tonight. I don’t have the heart to move Jessi from my bed.” S: “Sleep will have to do, because I’m not leaving your side.” He follows her up the stairs. A little while later, the three of them are in bed. Brenda has her arms wrapped around a sleeping Jessi. Sonny has his arms wrapped around both of them. That’s the way they stay. Their first night together as a family at home. ********************************************************************************************* Chapter 20 Jessi wakes up to find both her parents staring at her. She was lying in between them on the bed. B: Playing with Jessi’s hair, “Good morning sleepy head.” J: “The party’s over?” S: Laughs. “The party’s been over for awhile. It’s Monday morning.” J: “Oh.” She thinks for a minute. “Do we have to get up? I kinda like laying here.” B: “Not right away. But, when we’re hungry we probably will.” J: “Okay.” She closes her eyes and pretends to sleep some more. She opens them a few moments later. “Mom., will you make Saturday morning breakfast since we missed it?” B: “Sure, unless Daddy wants to cook. He cooks much better than I do.” She looks at Sonny. S: “No. I wouldn’t miss a chance to watch you cook. I gotta see this. Brenda in a kitchen? It’s hard to picture.” B: “Hey. I can cook okay, Mr. Gourmet.” She takes her pillow and throws it at him. J: “Yeah, mom can cook.” She whispers something in Brenda’s ear. B: “He sure does. Let’s get ready.” S: Looks at them. They both have determined eyes with a hint of mischief. “Ready for what? Should I be worried?” J: “T-attack!!” She starts tickling Sonny. Brenda starts in on him too. They are all laughing hysterically. Somehow the T-attack turned to Brenda and then to Jessi. When it was over they were in a heap on the floor. They had rolled out of the bed. Brenda untangled herself and stood up. The other two followed suit. B: I don’t know about you two, but I’m hungry now. Anyone want to help make breakfast?” J: “I will. I’ll go get the ingredients out.” She scampers out of the room, down the stairs, and into the kitchen. B: Turns to Sonny. “How about you?” S: Steps closer to her. “I think I’ll watch. You know, take in the scenery.” B: Takes a few steps closer to him so they are inches apart. “Oh, really?” S: “Really.” Takes her face in his hands and kisses her deeply and passionately. She wraps her arms around him and runs them up and down her back. The kiss continues through the phone ringing, to which they are oblivious. It only stops when Jessi knocks on the wall of the doorway. They both look up, a little embarrassed. J: “Mom, Jaxxy is on the phone.” B: Sighs. It was a nice thought that Jax checked up on her once a month, but couldn’t it have been at a better time? She breaks away from Sonny, takes the phone, and covers the receiver. “You weren’t rude to him, were you?” J: Shakes her head no, turns and goes back down the stairs. B: Puts the phone to her ear and sits on the bed. “Hello Jax. How’d you find me here?” Ja: “Lois said you were at home. I just wanted to see if the rumors were true.” B: “And what rumors would those be?” Ja: “The front page of the LA Times has a picture of you, Sonny and Jessi outside of Port Charles GH with the caption EX MOB BOSS COMES HOME TO SEE AILING DAUGHTER. Is this true?” B: “Well most of it is true, Jax. Sonny is alive, but he came before Jessi fell. She wasn’t ailing, just fell and hit her head. She’s fine now.” She covers the receiver again and whispers. “Sonny, get the newspaper. See what the headline is, I think we might have a problem.” S: He mouths the words “Why? What?” B: She motions him to leave. “Just get it.” He leaves. Ja: “Are you sure she is okay? How about you, are you okay? B: “We’re fine, all of us. Thanks for being thoughtful enough to check up on us.” Ja: “He isn’t good for you Brenda, but if he makes you happy, I wish you happiness.” B: “Thanks Jax. I wish you happiness with Sherri.” Ja: Thanks. I guess I’ll let you go. B: “”bye” Ja: “Bye” They hang up. She went downstairs to see Sonny. He looks up. S: “What did Jax want?” B: “To see if you were alive and to check up on me. He does that. Checks up on me once a month. I think the world knows you are alive now. Jax lives in Malibu with his wife and it’s all over the newspapers there. S: “Well you’re right.” He shows her the newspaper with the picture and a similar Headline. B: “This can’t be good can it?” S: “No. I knew word would get out soon that I was back, I just wanted it to last a little longer. It won’t be long before people start asking questions.” B: Goes over to him and wraps her arms around his waist. “Everything’s going to be fine, right?” S: Puts his arm around her shoulders. “Baby, I really don’t know. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.” ******************************************************************************************** A little later, breakfast has been finished. They are trying to keep the mood happy for Jessi, but she can tell things are a little tense. S: “That was great. Where did you learn to cook?” B: “Lois and Gloria taught me. I visited Bensonhurst for a couple months when Jessi was first born. I decided I needed to learn how to cook so they happily taught me.” S: “They did a great job, don’t you think so Jessi?” B: “I guess, but I never ate anything that mom cooked bad.” S: “I’ll have to test my cooking on you tonight.” J: “What do you cook?” S: “Anything you want.” B: “How about some sort of pasta?” S: “Okay pasta it is. Sound okay Jessi?” J: “Yeah.” She looks at both her parents. There was something going on that they weren’t telling her about. She wanted to know now. “What’s going on you two? You aren’t telling me something. I can see it in your eyes.” Sonny and Brenda looked at each other. What were they going to tell her? Chapter 21 Jessi looked at her parents expectantly for an answer. They stare at her wondering what to do. B: “Jessi what do you think we would be hiding from you?” She says from the sink where she had just put the breakfast dishes that she had gathered up. J: “I don’t know, but you are acting awfully suspicious. Mom you’re acting too happy and you’re very jittery. You talk to each other, but you haven’t made eye contact once during breakfast. Are you fighting about something?” B: “We’re not fighting, but we’re upset about something.” Brenda takes a deep breath and looks at Sonny looking for advice to as what she should tell Jessi. He shakes his head no, don’t tell her. “Jessi, I need talk to talk to Daddy, can leave us alone for a few minutes?” J: “No, I want to know right now! Did I do something? Is it me?” B: “No, Jess, it isn’t you. There are some things your father and I need to discuss before we discuss them with you. Could you please leave us alone for awhile? Weren’t you going to watch cartoons today?” J: Folds arms across her chest and defiantly looks at Brenda. “I’m not leaving.” B: Puts on her stern mother voice. “Jessica Michelle do as you are told.” Jessi looks at Sonny with pleading eyes to be allowed to stay. S: “You better do as your told Jessi.” Jessi got up in a huff, walked out of the kitchen slamming the door. A few seconds later a second door slammed upstairs as Jessi entered her bedroom. S: “She’s a stubborn one.” B: Facing the window above the kitchen sink. “Don’t I know it?” She turns around to face Sonny. “We need to tell her what is going on. She needs to know our lives might be in danger. We can’t keep this from her. There’s going to be wild rumors in the papers, magazines, and on television about your whereabouts and who know s how they will affect her?” S: “Can’t we just hide them from her?” B: “Sonny get real. Even if we could hide this from her, there is her school. The kids themselves will be coming up with their own stories. They’ll taunt and tease her. We have to tell her what is true and not unless you want her to believe a bunch of lies. Don’t you dare say take her out of school. I want her life to be as normal as possible.” S: “I wasn’t going to suggest taking her out of school. You’re right, her life does need to stay as normal as possible. I guess we have to do what we have to do to keep her safe. How do you think she’ll react if she knows she might be in danger?” B: “Honestly? I don’t really know. Safety is another issue we need to discuss. How are you planning on protecting us?” S: “I was going to talk to Jason about that. We’ll probably have guards around the house and I want a guard with you and Jessi at all times.” B: “I can deal with that, but I don’t know if she can. How long do you think this will go on?” S: “I don’t know. However long this plan runs for and all threats against us are gone.” B: “Do you have a time frame for this? A couple of weeks? Months? Years? S: He gets up from the table and walks over to her. “I don’t know. It could be any of those. Why are you so upset about it now? You were okay with it earlier.” B: “Reality has sunk in now. I was so relieved to hear you were finally out of the mob. I thought I wouldn’t have to worry about your life anymore, but you’re still in danger. I could handle it if it was just myself, but we have Jessi now and I couldn’t stand it if anything happened to her. S: “You think I like the idea of you or her in danger? I don’t. I’m doing everything I can to keep you and her out of danger. What more do you want me to do?” B: “I don’t know. I don’t know. I just want it to be over.” S: “I know. There isn’t much more I can do except leave town until everything is over. Oh God I really don’t want to do that, but if it keeps you and Jessi out of the line of fire I will. Do you want me to leave?” Brenda’s eyes wen t wide with fear. That was the last thing in the world that she wanted him to do. In that instant the kitchen door swung open and Jessi came running in. She throws her arms around Sonny and sobs “Don’t go Daddy. Please don’t go.” ******************************************************************************************** Somewhere else. Man: Looking at a picture. “Are you sure this is him? Do we have positive proof that Corinthos is among the living?” Woman: “ Yes, we’re positive.” M: “Is this his wife and child?” W: “Yes. Wife’s name is Brenda Barrett Corinthos, daughter’s name is Jessica Corinthos.” M: “I want to know everything there is to know about his family and his whereabouts for the last ten years.” W: “Yes sir. We already have people on that.” M: “Thank you. That’s all for now. You may leave.” The Woman leaves the room. M: “You’re going down for real this time Corinthos. I guarantee it.” ********************************************************************************************* Chapter 22 Recap: Brenda and Sonny had sent Jessi out of the room to discuss safety issues. Sonny started to think that he should leave. When he said this Jessi burst into the kitchen pleading Jessi to stay. Someone is out to get Sonny and his family. Jessi has her arms wrapped around Sonny and is on the verge of crying. B: “Jessi! I told you Daddy and I needed to discuss things ALONE.” J: “But I don’t want Daddy to go.” She avoided looking at Brenda and looked at Sonny with her biggest puppy dog eyes she could muster up. “You wouldn’t really leave us, would you Daddy? You promised you wouldn’t. You promised.” Sonny looked into her pitiful eyes. He hadn’t been around long enough to know how to deal with manipulation tricks that little girls try to use on their parents. Jessi wasn’t helping anything when she let a small tear roll down her cheek or when she curled her bottom up under her top front teeth, only she was missing her two top front teeth. He looked at Brenda for help in talking to her, but she shrugged her shoulders and calmly but cooly said, “Aren’t you going to answer her? We’re both waiting for an answer.” Sonny looked from Jessi to Brenda to Jessi again. He picked Jessi up who was still hanging onto him and sat down in a chair at the kitchen table and settled Jessi on his lap. She leaned against him, placed her head on his shoulder, and looked up at him with her big brown eyes full of questions. He smiled at her and wiped another lone tear from her cheek. “Don’t cry, Jessi.” He said soothingly. “Then don’t go, Daddy.” She said in a half-pleading tone, half bribing tone. Sonny looked at Brenda, who had moved from the sink to sit across the table from Jessi and Sonny. She urged him to go on to explain himself. “Jessi, you have to understand that whatever I do, I do it because I love you and your mom. I don’t want to see either one of you hurt. If I have to leave for awhile to keep you safe, I will. But remember, I’ll always love you.” Jessi starts to twirl her hair around her index finger. A nervous habit she’s acquired for when she nervous or scared. “I know you love me, Daddy, but why do you think you have to leave? You told me you weren’t in the mob anymore.” She narrows her eyes at him. “Were you lying?” Sonny takes her hand that she had her hair wrapped around and places it into his. He holds it, while periodically rubbing his thumb over her hand, in wonderment that her hand was so small, but still so perfect. “No, I didn’t lie to you. I’m out, but some people might not be too happy about that and they might try to hurt you, your mom, or me. I don’t want that to happen.” “Bad people might want to hurt you?” “Yeah.” “You’re scared?” “I guess so.” “Then don’t run. Aunt Robin used to tell me that running doesn’t solve anything. She also told me that if you love someone you spend all the time you can with them, because you never know how long that time will be.” “Your Aunt Robin is a smart lady. You listen to what she says.” Jessi withdraws her hand from Sonny’s, and in a distant voice she says, “Yeah, I do.” She slides off his lap and looks at Brenda. “I’m going to go look at the stars.” Brenda nods okay and Jessi walks out the kitchen door. Sonny looks on bewildered as she leaves. “What was that about?” “She has stars on her ceiling.” “Okay, and…” He urges her to go on, but she doesn’t She gets up and looks out the window above the sink. Sonny gets up, follows her, and stands behind her. “Brenda, are you okay?” “See that tree out there?” She points to a cherry tree in the backyard. Sonny nods yes. “It’s changed so much since Robin and I planted it. You should have seen us. Two petite girls and a baby carrying around this tree at the garden store. So many people offered to help us, but we were determined to bring it home and plant it ourselves. Jessi was a couple of months old. I had just come home from Bensonhurst, bought this house and Robin was living with us. I dragged Jessi’s baby swing onto the porch so she could watch us. We spent all day digging and making sure the tree was just so. We were tired and dirty at the end of the day, but we had our tree. Robin used to say that the tree was a symbol of our love for loves gone by and hope for understanding what life had thrown our way. I was a young naïve mother then, Jessi was an innocent baby and Robin was our voice of wisdom. Everything has changed so much since then.” “Brenda…” She turns around and hushes him. “Let me finish.” He nods for her to go on. “What I’m trying to say is that I’ve changed. You’ve changed. This whole town has changed. How do you think we are going to work out? I’m not the young girl that you fell in love with anymore. Can you deal with that? Can I deal with how you have changed?” TBC
