Anniversary Date
The sticky feel of an unknown substance met her fingers as she moved her arm along the back of the bench seat. Being at a police station had not been what Margaret Howtan had planned for an anniversary diner. But then again, having her fiancee arrested as he unlocked the car door for her wasn't in the plan either.
Margaret brushed her clean hand nervously through her golden curls before reaching into her purse for a handkerchief to wipe the offensive substance off, unaware that her nose was snarled up from the idea and feel of the wetness.
After what seemed like hours, she saw her fiancee's head bob as he came up the stairs, a police officer behind him.
"I'm glad you fella's understand," he said, turning to the officer. "I didn't know about the blue law."
As Margaret allowed her fiancee to put his arm around her waist, she smiled as he leaned down and whispered in her ear. "Had I known it was illegal to burp in public, I would have chosen the broiled fish."
