FINOLA HUGHES RETURNING TO GENERAL HOSPITAL?
Rumors persist that AMC may soon be losing Finola Hughes to GH, her old stomping grounds and the source of her character.
Reps for both shows have kept mum, but more fuel has just been added to the fire: Sources report that at a September fan event, Hughes leading man, Vincent Irizarry, stated that Hughes had signed a contract---but did not specifically say the pact was with AMC. An inside source claims that Hughes deal is with ABC, not AMC. It is timed to allow Hughes a possible January exit from Pine Valley. A return to GH could follow in February, says sources, who claim that Hughes signed for 2 years with the soap she called home from 1985-91. Other sources target Hughes's transition for early 2004.
So, Anna might pack up her bags and baby-to-be and head for Port Charles
EVA LaRUE CALLAHAN – THE TV GUIDE INTERVIEW
Eva LaRue Callahan is back on All My Children in her signature role of Maria Santos-Grey, but take note: Maria has changed. Gone is the devoted doctor whose love for Edmund Grey could never be rocked. In her place is a woman who can't recall her past, struggling to piece together a life she can't remember as the free spirit she's inevitably become.
The transformation of character is a nice compliment to Callahan's real life changes. She and husband John Callahan, AMC's Edmund, welcomed their first child, Kaya McKenna, into the world in December. Callahan has also forged ahead into the song writing business, working with a good friend to pen a theme song for Maria and Edmund. But one thing hasn't changed, her loyalty and respect for work done on AMC. TV Guide Online caught up with the very busy actress to talk about her return, her music and the joys of motherhood. — Delaina Dixon
Why was the timing never right to return to AMC before now?
Storyline-wise, I was thinking maybe Edmund would hook up with another female character, and I could come back and ruin their marriage. (Chuckles) I was doing other things; I was recurring on Third Watch and Soul Food, I was spending time with my family in California, and I was having a good time. But when I learned I was pregnant, I felt I needed to be home. There was always a chance I could land a job in Los Angeles, and then I would have to be bi-coastal.
Is that what made you come back?
I was missing the show, and the storyline was getting good between Brooke and Edmund, so I thought it would be the perfect time to return.
I'm sure you were courted by other soaps during your hiatus. Was there ever a thought of returning to any show other than AMC?
I had always said if I go back, it would be to AMC. They had been so good to me; they had let me do two movies of the week while I was there. My husband is there. And I love the character Maria.
There were no other temptations?
Actually, I was offered the role of Rosanna on As the World Turns. Cady McClain, who played Dixie on AMC, is now playing that character. It happened a month before I called AMC to tell them I was interested in coming back. ATWT's executive producer, Chris Goutman, who had been a director on AMC, called and offered me the job. He said, "Don't worry, we'll make it a recurring role so you can do other projects." Every actor wants to hear that. But I couldn't do that to AMC. If they had found me on the street, I think they would have buried a stake in my heart.
That would have been very interesting casting.
It is interesting how people get cast. When I first auditioned for AMC, Daisy Fuentes was up for the role. I had auditioned for the parts of Gloria, Lauren and Kendall, and I didn't get them. AMC said, "We tested you in all these roles, and we'd think you'd be perfect for Maria, would you like the job?" And that's how that happened. Who knows? Would John have ended up married to Daisy Fuentes? I think it was meant to be.
How has AMC changed since you left five years ago?
The faces of the cast have definitely changed. Teresa Blake (ex-Gloria), Sydney Penny (ex-Julia) and Sarah Michelle Gellar (ex-Kendall), all these people I started with are gone. We were like a big frat house starting out on the soaps. Finola Hughes (Anna) is the new fun person, and Kelly Ripa (Hayley) is still there. I'm getting to know people all over, and I'm making new friends. I was nervous coming back, but everyone was so welcoming.
Are you back in the same dressing room?
I'm back in the one Sarah Michelle Gellar and I shared. It's my little baby shrine and husband shrine. I have this picture of Kaya and I in there. She's near my face, and we're looking off to the side. It was taken during a photo shoot. I asked the photographer if he could do a couple of shots at the end of the roll, and Kaya just jumped into the picture with me. We were looking at someone on the side who was trying to make her laugh and smile. It's very candid and really captures the moment.
Now that you're back, how are you making the new Maria different from the Maria we knew before the plane crash?
The one thing that has changed is that she is free to be capricious. Maria was very grounded and responsible and loyal. She would never do anything out of context. Now that she's been stripped of all her responsibilities, she can be who she wants to be day to day. She can make some funky choices, which she's already started to do.
Such as?
I end up in a compromising position with someone. When I did it, I thought, "That's not Maria." Then I thought, "Yes, that's not Maria. It's a product of who she is now."
Was it surprising to learn that David was behind Maria's extended disappearance from Pine Valley?
When I first read the script where I called David, I was shocked. I had no idea I knew David — or vice versa. Vincent Irizarry [who plays David] left me a message to call him so we could figure out how we knew each other. That rarely happens to us in daytime. You see a storyline coming a zillion miles away. This was really fun for both of us, not knowing our connection, and the plot twist of my cell phone ending up Anna's hands.
You came back just as Brooke and Edmund were getting married. Did you call Julia Barr, who plays Brooke, to apologize for busting in on her marriage?
Julia knows that if anyone on a soap gets happily married, they've got no story. There's nothing better than a little controversy.
With Maria no longer thinking she's Maria, is it possible that she could find a new love?
Possibly... The fans are so happy with the possibility that Edmund and Maria could be getting back together. But there's a real strong Edmund/Brooke fan base, too. I'm sure they're saying, "Maria, go find someone else!"
Would you like to see more Santoses return to Pine Valley?
Yes. I know there's one sister [Anita] that pops up as a recast from time to time. I saw Sydney Penny at Sarah Michelle Gellar's engagement party a few months ago. She's from California, like me, and she's been doing a cable show that shoots in Paris and Montreal. Now she's back home with her family, and she's really not interested in living on the East Coast again. She wouldn't mind doing daytime again, but I don't think we'll see her on AMC.
You recently wrote a theme song for Maria and Edmund.
During the Emmys, John and I had talked about how the soaps don't use a lot of real music. I thought that it would be great if Maria and Edmund had their own theme song. John said, "What type of theme song would that be: 'I don't know who I am?'" (Chuckles) I suggested that we should try to write one. We tossed the idea around, and I got the nerve to call a really dear friend of mine, Clay Ostwald, who's part of Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine.
It was a collaboration?
At first, I wondered if calling Clay and asking to write song together was the equivalent of him calling me and asking for a job at AMC. I didn't want to put our friendship on the line. John said, "Tell him what you just told me." I called him, and he said it was a fabulous idea. I wrote down Maria and Edmund's whole storyline and he came up with a really beautiful song.
What's it called?
"Love Me Once Again." There was an episode of Oprah that got more mail than any other show, and it was about women who had lost their identity within a marriage. They were so busy being a wife and a mom, they had no idea who they were anymore. A friend of mine went through that; she woke up and didn't know who she was anymore. She and her husband had changed so much for the relationship, they had to fight to remember why they originally fell in love. That's what the song is about.
What do you do in your own marriage to keep it on track?
When John and I notice that we are getting too serious and we're not laughing enough, we realize that we have to get away from the stuff that can weigh you down at the house. We take a weekend away to get back to just us, to laugh together.
Your baby Kaya McKenna is 9 months old. What has been the most unexpected and joyous part of motherhood?
There's nothing in the world like hearing her giggle, no sound like it. When she laughs, it makes me want to cry joyous tears because it's the most magical sound I've ever heard. She's so funny and her little personality is coming out. You can see she's the product of two actors.
Do you bring Kaya to the set?
I try to bring her on days that I don't have a heavy storyline, because it's hard to be torn between being a mommy and concentrating on lines. They are both full-time jobs. There's a funny thing that happens when you become a mom. Being pregnant and giving birth makes you forget things. Memorization for me now is so hard, but maybe my brain has just atrophied.
Do you and Kelly Ripa exchange baby tips?
She keeps telling me about when [her son] Michael did this and when [her daughter] Lola did that, so I'm gauging my own on hers. Michael was so brilliant as a baby, he started saying words at four months. He's really an intelligent child.
Does John get up in the middle of the night to help with the baby?
He's very good in the morning; he's always gotten up earlier than me. So he gets up, changes her, feeds her and gives her a morning bottle. The two of them read The New York Times together until I get up.
Do you think you and John will expand your family?
Eventually. I'm going to definitely wait until Kaya goes to preschool so I can have some alone time with the next one. Right now, if someone else's child is sitting in my lap, Kaya will climb over his or her face to get to me. She's protective. The next one is going to have some big sister to contend with.
CLASS ACT!
David Canary [Adam] and Marcy Walker [Liza] were unable to attend the recent fan luncheon.
Mr. Canary wrote this letter:
Dear wonderful, loyal fans,
I regret that I can't be with you all on this joyful day. Our family runs a charity auction in support of our hometown library every year. This happens to be the day... among other things, Marcy Walker and I are the bartenders. It seems the more the ladies drink, the higher their bids: our job is essential. Thank you all for coming today, and for your enthusiasm and loyalty. You are indeed, the boat that floats our soap. Personally, I love every one of you.
DC
BYE-BYE VANESSA
Is Vanessa really crazy? That question may lay dormant now that Marj Dusay, who plays the role, is exiting the show, but Dusay isn't afraid to expound her theories on the woman's mental state. "There are psychopathic people who truly don't think they are doing anything wrong," Dusay declares to TV Guide Online. "I always played it like it was for real; Vanessa convinced herself that it was." Despite the severity of housing several different alters, Dusay realized her character still had to be entertaining. "Unfortunately, as complicated as this character is... it got to be a little bit silly, so the only way I thought to play it was beyond reality," she reveals, "someone who was that bizarre could have a few different personalities."
Dusay, who is shooting scenes through the end of this week, promises her exit will be one worth watching. "I should make some sort of a splash with my ending," she teases. She's putting her job search on hold to do some traveling, an option she hasn't had in the last few years. "I would plan a vacation and a job would come up," explains the actress, who will visit family on the West Coast. "This time, I'm hoping one comes after the vacation."

MAGGIE & BIANCA - *REALLY TOGETHER?
Maggie has been acting differently around Bianca lately - - moonlight swim anyone? Fans are beginning to speculate about whether Frankie's twin also is gay. Elizabeth Hendrickson, who now portrays Frankie's heterosexual twin Maggie, would approve.
"If they choose to have our characters become an item, I would be more then happy," she declares. "But I hope if they do that, they would make clear distinctions between Frankie and Maggie. They're not the same person. I love working with Eden (Riegel, Bianca). We have an amazing chemistry. I would also like to see a homosexual relationship on daytime, it's way past time."
As of right now, though, Hendrickson says Maggie and Bianca are just friends. "They're becoming closer," she allows. "Their friendship is evolving, and now that Tim has come to town, Bianca's pushing her [toward him] and Maggie isn't ready for that. It's harder for Bianca because the more time she spends with Maggie, the more flashbacks she has. It's hard to look at the girl who looks like the one she was once in love with - and could be again?"
THE *NEW* JAMIE MARTIN
Micah Alberti's life changed forever last Friday. He watched it happen with a humble grin and his hand partially covering his eyes.
As recently as last month, Alberti expected to play football this fall at Oregon High School, where he was set to begin his senior year. Instead, Alberti moves to New York alone next week as a full-time cast member on the soap opera staple "All My Children."
Late last week, Alberti saw himself for the first time in an episode when it aired on ABC. He stars as Jamie Martin, a handsome teen character who returned to the show older and healthier after being exiled to a special school - in a vintage soap opera twist -- when he mysteriously lost his voice.
"All My Children" aired Alberti's brief first scene with Kelly Ripa, best known as Regis Philbin's talk-show cohort. Granted, Ripa's no Meryl Streep, but Alberti held his own with the TV celebrity. The moment after the scene appeared, calls flooded the Alberti's rural Oregon household, where Micah (pronounced *Mike-ah*) watched the show with his mother, Donna, and his two brothers, Cody, 15, and Logan, 11.
During a commercial, the family put one call on the speaker phone. It was one of Alberti's buddies.
"I SAW MICAH ON TV," the friend screeched with glee.
The enthusiasm is understandable. Alberti planned to play free safety for the Oregon Panthers; now he's entering show business in New York as quickly as lunging after a fumble. Alberti, who turned 18 on August 19, had worked as a part-time Madison-area model, and spent 11 months working with the professor who runs Northern Illinois University's theater program.
When Alberti traveled to New York in early July, his manager planned a few weeks of acting lessons and, maybe, a few auditions. Then, in late July, two days after a casual audition, Alberti landed a three-year contract on "All My Children."
"It's one of the fastest takeoffs I've had as a client," said Alberti's manager Harding Jones, a veteran behind-the-scenes executive. "It's very rare for someone to have virtually no credits on a resume have a career go so quickly."
Alberti's big break may have happened practically overnight, but he earned it. From July 2001 to last June, he drove five hours roundtrip to study up to four times a week at Northern Illinois in DeKalb.
And disappointment? Alberti spent three humble months in early 2000 during casting for pilot TV shows in Los Angeles. Casting directors told him over and over, "You're green," meaning he was inexperienced.
Alberti agreed. "I was low on training. I didn't know anything basically. I felt lost. I saw people getting jobs here and there. It was so stressful and slow. My dad (Terry) and I went stir crazy."
Afterward, he switched managers to the New York-based Jones, who in turn lined up the private acting teacher at Northern Illinois. What entertainment execs never questioned were Alberti's good looks. In Madison, he posed for print ads, including one for Famous Footwear, while working for Madison's Rock Agency.
In New York, Alberti will combine his role on "All My Children" with high school classes in the morning and, yes, more acting lessons.
Having been held back one year before kindergarten, Alberti enters his senior year slightly older than many of his peers. Still, heading to New York is daunting for anyone. The decision to move there was difficult.
"Our family is close," Alberti said. "My Mom had tears right away."
And Alberti already dealt with New York's harsh reality. In early July, a robber broke through the screened window in Alberti's apartment and grabbed cash on a table with Alberti in the room. The robber wasn't caught.
In another incident, his wallet fell out of his pocket during a cab ride. As he told the cab driver to wait after letting him off, the cabbie sped away.
"It's New York," Alberti says with a sigh.
With his role on "All My Children," Alberti can afford an apartment three blocks from the show's TV studio. His fellow cast members have been supportive, too. Before taping a scene with Michael Knight, a longtime "All My Children" veteran, Knight could see Alberti was anxious.
"Just breathe," Knight told him. "You're OK. I remember when I was in your shoes."
Episodes airing on Sept. 5 and Sept. 10 will showcase Alberti.
Last Friday, he watched himself play an important guest at a small wedding. He walked the bride down the aisle.
"I'm thinking, 'Don't trip, don't trip,'" he said after the scene aired and laughed at his inexperience.
His mother was proud. "Remember," she said, "he's never been in front of a camera before."
CASTING AROUND!
The role of Amanda Dillon has not yet been cast. The search is still on for just the 'right' actress to play the part. No info as to when Amanda is coming to PV or what she'll be like.
Kimberly McCullough is being highly pursued to come back to in the role of Robin Scorpio. So, Anna may be getting her daughter back! Sources are saying that the show is in talks with Kimberly McCullough (ex-Robin) to reprise her role and join Finola Hughes in Pine Valley.
A young boy is being cast who will have connections to a major character.
RUMORS
9/27 - Josh Duhamel [Leo du Pres] confirmed he is leaving AMC and has filmed his last episodes.
5/17 - Eileen Herlie, who plays Myrtle, will also be leaving AMC. She wants to retire.
4/12 - Rumor has it that Teresa Blake (ex-Gloria) might slink her way back into Pine Valley! [9/27-This one is still flying around the Internet!]
MARK CONSUELOS MOVIE!
The Mark Consuelos movie,The Great Raid, is slated to be released in 2003. It's stars Benjamin Bratt - former boyfriend of Julia Roberts.
The movie is based on the true story of Colonel Henry Mucci's 1945 raid on notorious Japanese death camp in the Philippines. The production could take Mark to Southeast and Far North Queensland, Australia. Filming should take a minimum of three months. TPTB are not saying if Mark will return to the AMC when the movie is completed .
TREY/SAM PAGE
Considering that he's committed quite a few misdeeds since coming to town, it's no big surprise that James "Trey" Kenyon III has a hidden agenda. But don't write him off as a bad guy just yet. "When there's nothing, for him financially, he's just a normal guy," says his portrayer, Sam Page. "He does, however, tend to resort to deviousness when the pressure is on." Since PV soon will get the scoop on this enigmatic attorney, what kind of reaction can be expected of its citizens? "I think some people are going to say, 'I knew it all along!' shares Page. "Others are ging to be scared by it. But the characters with questionable morals - - they'll be intrigued."
SHE'S BACK!!
REJOICE! Fan favorite Eva LaRue has returned to the show, confirmed outgoing ABC daytime president Angela Shapiro. "Our fans have been waiting a long time for her return, and it's my pleasure to welcome her home," Shapiro says. In 1993, LaRue originated the role of brilliant neurologist Maria Santos, who disappeared in a plane crash in 1997 and is presumed dead. LaRue's return is a definite, but fans will have to wait and see if the actress will return in her former AMC persona. LaRue has starred in several TV movies, including A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes: The Annette Funicello Story, and has appeared on Showtime's Soul Food. Married to AMC star John Callahan (Edmund), the couple welcomed their first child, Kaya McKenna, into the world in December.
MICHAEL NADER [ex-Dimitri] SUES ABC
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
"They treated me like scum." according to Michael Nader.
Michael Nader [ex-Dimitri] has sued ABC for nearly $34
million, charging the network scrubbed him from the soap and stopped him
from working elsewhere when he went into drug rehab.
The dark and handsome 57-year-old actor who played Hungarian Count Dimitri
Marick on the show off and on for nearly 10 years alleges ABC's actions
damaged him financially and professionally.
Nader, whose dashing and rich count became the love interest of Susan
Lucci's character, Erica Kane, said in court papers that things turned sour
in February 2001, when he "became ill" and went on medical leave.
But the actor actually was in drug rehab after a narcotics arrest in the
East Village. The Manhattan district attorney's office said he pleaded
guilty and got three years' probation.
Although Nader says he signed a four-year, $1.74 million contract in April
2000, his character was written out of "All My Children" after his arrest
and rehab stint.
Nader says in court papers the network misled him into thinking he would
return to his role and refused to release him from his contract so he could
work elsewhere. ABC then fired him to avoid paying his salary, he charged.
A spokeswoman for the show declined comment, saying she hadn't seen the
suit.
THE SINGLE GUY?
Now that Tad is facing life as a single guy again, viewers are wondering who will be the next notch on his bedpost? Though onetime paramour Liza’s marriage is on the rocks, most viewers seemed to loathe that pairing, so the scribes would be wise to avoid it. Fans who saw Michael E. Knight (Tad) at recent fan events report that the actor toyed with the possibility of being paired with hot-to-trot Greenlee or sexy Anna.
[Note from ~Sonny: He told me that he thinks "Rebecca (Greenlee) is amazing and would love a story line with her." Also, Anna is one of the Pine Valley women that interest him.
9/27 - Now that Leo is leaving Pine Valley - Tad and Greenlee might just get together! Who knows? Stranger things have happened.
SOD asked Executive Producer Jean Dadario Burke for her opinion. “Anything is possible,” she laughs. That includes bringing on a new character. But, she notes, “there are a lot of females on the canvas already.”
There’s one thing that won’t happen. “We would not recast Dixie,” assures the exec.
KELLY RIPA INTERVIEW - FROM TV GUIDE
Steamy summer rain is pouring — make that pounding — on the fans lined up outside the Live with Regis and Kelly soundstage in New York City. But their spirits are not dampened, and once inside they laugh giddily during the syndicated show, which features 67-year-old Regis Philbin as the lovable, befuddled crank and 30-year-old Kelly Ripa as his Gracie Allen — part dingbat, part kamikaze. During commercials, the hosts mix with the crowd, posing for photos, accepting gifts. Ripa is bombarded with questions about her husband and All My Children co-star Mark Consuelos (she still plays Hayley to his Mateo), their kids, four-year-old Michael and newcomer Lola Grace (born June 16), and how she manages to "do it all." Well, how does she do it all? To find out, we met with Ripa after the show in her dressing room-turned-nursery.
TV Guide: Your audience marvels at how you combine motherhood and work, but how tough is it, really? Kelly Ripa: Nobody should be impressed by me. It's very silly to think I'm having a hard time of it, just because I have two jobs and two kids. Puh-leez. The two salaries afford me a nice lifestyle, I can hire people to help me and I have a working spouse. I'm fascinated and deeply impressed by single moms who juggle jobs and kids. They are the ones we should be in awe of.
