Alex fiddled with her food as Annie was once again bragging about her accomplishments.It was bad enough that Annie was chaperoning her and her friends tomorrow for career day as she and her classmates were going to Los Angeles,but she had to rub in the fact that she was about to meet her idol,Dr. K.P. Andrews,the youngest surgeon in history at age 12.It was going to be a long 2 days!

Annie:I’ve always wanted to meet her!I can’t wait till tomorrow.
Barbara Mack:Oh,that’s great honey!
George Mack:You know,I envy you!It takes courageous young girl to handle a surgical residency with all the pressure and long work hours.Did you know that the average surgical intern has to stay in the hospital for an entire 24 hours once every four days.
Annie:You know what,I might just decide to try to enroll in the premed program next year.Instead of becoming a scientist,I might try my hand at medicine,even surgery!

Both her parents nodded their approval.Then they FINALLY turned their attention to their youngest daughter Alex.

Barbara Mack:So Alex,what did you sign up for for career day.
Alex:I’ve signed up for County General Hospital.I’m going to study with Dr. K.P. Andrews as well.

Annie gave Alex an odd look.

Alex:What I can’t be a doctor too?
Annie:Are you sure you can handle it.
Barbara Mack:Annie
Alex:Look just because I’m just an average student does not mean I can’t be a doctor.
Annie:I never said that.It’s just that being a doctor takes a lot of hard work.
Alex:SO!I’m a hard worker too you know.
George Mack:Now girls.Annie,if Alex wants to try to become a doctor,I say she has every right to do so.

Annie conceded and that was the end of that,at least concerning the parent’s participation in the issue.As soon as Alex and Annie went upstairs and entered the privacy of their room the heated argument continued.

Annie:You’re not going.
Alex:Why not!
Annie:You know why not!It’s too risky!
Alex:I’m going whether you approve or not!It’s my decision to make not yours!
Annie:You know what will happen if they catch you glowing or using any of your powers. Maybe the students of Danielle Atron Junior High may be fooled but the doctors of LA County General certainly won’t.
Alex:Then I’ll just have to be extra careful then.Look I really mean it Annie.I might just want to consider being a doctor.I think its cool too you know.You get to help people and make a difference in people’s lives.I think I might just try it out.
Annie lightened up just a little and even smiled.
Annie:Are you sure about this.I mean is it what you really want?

Alex nodded.

Annie:All right.

Alex lightened up a little too and hugged Annie for supporting her.The truth is Alex did want to consider being a doctor.She had read all the school brochures concerning career day as decided to explore her options.She always liked working with people and helping them with their problems and that was what a doctor does.It seemed like an interesting career to explore,at least she thought.

Alex:Thanks Annie.

During the heated discussion,neither of them noticed that the doorbell rang..Soon, Annie heard her mother calling her name from downstairs.

Annie:What is it mom?
Barbara Mack:There’s a Kelly Phillips here to see you.

Alex and Annie exchanged odd looks and immediately went downstairs to take a look and confirm their mother’s odd statement.Sure enough,Kelly Phillips was at the front door.She was carrying her schoolbooks with her.Barbara Mack goes upstairs while Annie talks to Kelly.

Kelly:Hi Alex!Um,Annie,uh,I really need your help.
Annie:You need my help.
Kelly:It’s concerning a very important math test I have on Thursday.I really need a tutor to help me pass it.
Annie:And you picked me?
Kelly:Well,I was hoping you could help me.
Annie:No.Goodbye.

Kelly puts her foot in the door before Annie can close it.

Kelly:Hold on a minute.I’ll pay you twenty dollars for just this one session.

Annie is about to close the door.

Kelly:Fifty dollars.

Kelly this time shows Annie her money and sure enough it is enough.Annie is intolerent of Kelly and does not want to help for many reasons.Kelly was the most popular girl in Danielle Atron Junior High and the most snobbish.Her ridiculing of Alex and her friends as rejects being the primary reason.Since Kelly would obviously not be caught dead being anywhere near Annie or Alex or both in public,this sudden request was obviously a ruse of some sort to expose some sort of secret of Annie and Alex to gossip about to her friends.

Annie:No!Okay!

With that Annie promptly closed the door on Kelly’s face.

Kelly:Well the next time you need my help,don’t call on me!! And with that,Kelly promptly left in a fit of rage.She was so enraged that she did not notice Ray approaching.She ran straight into him and something around her neck was knocked off.
Kelly:Sorry.
Ray:That’s okay.What are you doing here Kelly?

Kelly didn’t answer.She just hurriedly picked up what she dropped.It was a stethoscope.Ray watched Kelly curiously as she left.He then proceeded to the Mack’s front door and rang the doorbell.Annie answered it.

Annie:Kelly for the last time no!Oh,Ray come in.
Ray:What was that all about.
Annie:Oh nothing.Apparently,Kelly wanted me to help her with her math test on Thursday.I of course said no.
Alex:You were a little rude to her don’t you think. Annie:Oh,I very much doubt it.She probably came here to spy on us and given our little secret I don’t think it was worth the risk.
Alex:Well anyways I promised Ray that I’d help him set up for Nicole’s surprise birthday party at the Half Life tonight.Mom said it was okay.

Annie nodded and the Alex and Ray left the house.

Nicole was on her way to the Half Life.Apparently there was something very important happening and she was needed to report to the restaurant and meet her friends there. Although her friends did not elaborate on what the emergency was,she of course was obliged to attend.

When Nicole approached the restaurant,she immediately got a feeling that something was not right.It was all dark inside as if the restaurant was closed.Yet it was 7:00pm and the Half Life closed at 9:00pm.She was about to leave confused but the front door suddenly opened and Alex began beckoning Nicole inside.

Alex:Nicole!
Nicole:Alex.What’s going on!

Alex kept waving Nicole to come inside and Nicole eventually complied.It was almost total darkness but Nicole could tell that she and Alex were not alone.Then suddenly the lights snapped back on!

Ray,Robin,Louis,and Others:SURPRISE!HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Nicole:Oh!You guys shouldn’t have!

It was turning out to be the most perfect week in Nicole’s life.First was her rather unexpected surprise birthday party by her friends,then tomorrow she was going to a school field trip to meet her idol Dr. K.P. Andrews.What could be better than this?The party went well and after dinner was served Nicole began opening her presents.It was at this time that the most unlikely and person in Paradise Valley to attend Nicole’s birthday decided to make her presence known.

It was Kelly Phillips.The girl had obviously noticed the front door was open despite the CLOSED sign on the restaurant window and in her usually rude fashion decided to investigate.

And with that Kelly left without saying a word.All of the party guests were stunned at what Kelly said.

Louis:Was that Kelly Phillips?
Ray:Sure looked like Kelly Phillips.Sure sounded like her.
Robin:For a minute there I thought one of my dire predictions would become true.

Alex did not listen.Normally when Kelly tried to be nice it was usually flat and most certainly fake.But somehow she seemed different today.Her apology seemed genuine and as if she really meant it.Instead of joining her friends as they continued the party,she decided to leave and find Kelly.

Nicole:Alex?Alex where are you going?
Alex:I’ll be back.There’s something I got to do.

Kelly was lost in thought as she walked home.The party was stirring up strong emotions in her,emotions of loneliness and regret.Am I doing the right thing?No,I must be strong.I’m going back to Los Angeles and that’s final.I’ve spent 6 years of my life dedicated to my career.I made a difference!I actually did something special!Kelly thought.But a nagging feeling told her that somehow she was doing the wrong thing,that she wasn’t ready to make such a decision yet.She begun thumbing the stethoscope around her neck.

Alex:Hey Kelly,wait up!
Kelly:Hi Alex.
Alex:I just thought you could use some company.Can I walk with you?
Kelly:Sure,I don’t mind.You know I really meant what I said back there.I am sorry for all the ridicule I put you and your friends through.
Alex:That’s okay.
Kelly:They’re not all that bad though.Especially Scott.

Alex nodded.Both Alex and Scott had broken up about a week ago over an argument regarding photos she made for the school newspaper.When he remade the photo shoot of the school basketball team and put it in the newsapaper it made her mad and resulted in a confrontation that broke up their relationship for sure.This just consummated the Scott’s other relationship with Kelly and obviously the two going steady ever since.

Alex:Look,don’t mind Annie and my friends,they’re not all that bad either.They just think your just some stuck up snob who knows everything.
Kelly:Don’t you?
Alex:Well you do have a tendency to ridicule and make fun of us every day.
Kelly:I guess I had that coming don’t I.
Alex:Why don’t you join me at Nicole’s birthday party.I’m sure I can convince Nicole to let you join in the fun.

Kelly shook her head.

Kelly:No,I gotta pack up.I’m leaving for Los Angeles first thing in the morning.
Alex:What a coincidence!I’m going on the field trip to!Maybe we can talk more,get to know each other.
Kelly:I won’t be on the field trip Alex.I’ll be taking the charter bus and probably won’t be coming back for a few years.
Alex:Why not?
Kelly:It’s personal.There’s something I have to do.
Alex:Are your parents moving.
Kelly:No.I’m the only one that’s going.
Alex:Are you running away?
Kelly:No,no.My parents know about it.They support my decision.
Alex:Does Scott know?
Kelly:Yeah,he knows.He isn’t too happy about it.
Alex:And what about your schoolwork,your math test on Thursday.
Kelly:I made that up about the math test.I just wanted to say something to her in private and only used the math test as an excuse to see her.As you know I didn’t get much of a chance.Oh,I’m home.

The pair had been so engrossed in their conversation that Kelly did not realize that she was home until she was in front of her house.Kelly and Alex shook hands possibly for the last time and Kelly went into her house.Alex watched her and wondered if she would ever see Kelly again.Somehow Alex felt that Kelly needed a friend badly right now.

The next morning,Annie and Alex had to wake up very early as the schoolbus to Los Angeles was leaving at 9:00am.The sisters had packed their bags the night before so all they had to do is eat breakfast quickly.Alex however had uncharacteristically woke up before Annie and ate breakfast quickly.She then said she’d be back soon then rushed out the door before Annie and her parents could ask her what was going on.

Alex raced through the neighbourhood to Kelly’s house.She was hoping to catch Kelly before she left for Los Angeles.Sure enough Kelly was loading her bags into her mother’s car.

Alex:Hey Kelly!
Kelly:Hi Alex.Mom, you remember Alex Mack.

Mrs. Phillips nodded to Alex as she put the last of Kelly’s luggage into her car.

Mrs. Phillips:Alex.You’re going to school now.Pretty early don’t you think?
Alex:I’m just here to say goodbye to Kelly one last time.
Kelly:Thanks for talking to me last night.

Alex nodded.

Alex:Are you sure you have to go?
Kelly:There’s something important I have to do in LA.
Alex:I’d never thought I’d say this but I’m gonna miss you?

Kelly smiled at that and the two embraced.

Mrs. Phillips:I hate to break this up but its 7:55.We still have to get the bus tickets and the charter bus leaves at 8:30.

Kelly and Alex nodded and let go of each other.Kelly was crying a little.Then Alex came up with a plan.

Alex:Can you meet at the school?I have an idea.
Kelly:I can’t.We have to go to the bus station.
Alex:Just trust me on this.Besides it’s on the way isn’t it.
Both Kelly and her mother nodded.
Alex:Just trust me on this.

Alex ran home as fast as she can.Annie and her parents were already putting hers and Annie’s luggage into the car when Alex arrived.Alex told them that there was something important she had to do and that she had to be at school immediately.Since everything was packed the Macks got into the car and headed straight for the school.

The schoolbus taking the kids to Los Angeles was already there.Since it was still pretty early,only Miss Harris was there.Alex asked to talk to Miss Harris in private and Alex told her about Kelly leaving for LA possibly for good.

Miss Harris:Alex,it’s not what you think.I know it must sound strange that Kelly is leaving for Los Angeles alone but there’s more to this than you think.
Alex:Of course there is.I mean why would Kelly leave Paradise Valley and all her friends and family behind?And why is her family supporting this?
Miss Harris:It’s a long story.But I can’t tell you because I promised Kelly not to reveal her secret to anyone.You see,Kelly had a past life,a life that made her unique among most children.Kelly is not really your average teenager.I can’t give you anymore details but all I’m gonna say is that Kelly is a very special girl with a very special gift that is the reason why she is returning to Los Angeles.To be honest though,I think she is jumping the gun a little by leaving now.But she spent years building her special talent so I guess her family decided that she had every right to decide whether or not to pursue that talent.

Alex thought about this for a moment.She wondered what kind of special gift Kelly had that would cause her to leave her friends and family behind.Yet somehow Alex knew that Kelly wasn’t ready just yet.Somehow she felt that she had to do something,something that would help Kelly decide to stay.

Alex:Miss Harris,do you think there could be room on the bus for one more.

Miss Harris smiled at that. Miss Harris:Maybe we can offer Kelly a free ride to L.A.I’ll talk to the bus driver.

Kelly and her mother arrived a few minutes later as well as Ray,Nicole,Robin,and Louis at the same time.Alex’s friends were wondering what Kelly was doing here.Both Miss Harris and Alex told Kelly that the bus driver agreed to take Kelly to L.A.

Mrs. Phillips:Kelly,maybe you ought to take them up on their offer.
Kelly:Mom,their destination is the same as mine.They might find out about my secret.
Mrs. Phillips:They are going to find out eventually,especially once you resume your career.Besides,this may be your last chance in a long while to spend time with people your own age.

Kelly thought about this for a moment.Again she found herself thumbing the stethoscope around her neck.For a long moment she was undecided.Then she nodded in resignation.

The schoolbus left at 9:00am exactly with one extra passenger,Kelly Phillips.To everyone’s surprise,Alex decided to sit beside Kelly.It was this occasion that Alex decided to find out more about Kelly’s secret.Alex started with small talk about life,friends and just about anything most teenagers generally talked about and managed to get Kelly to talk about her past a little.Kelly had severe asthma when she was four and had spent a lot of time in the hospital.She had befriended a girl who had leukemia and who eventually died.Alex could tell this was a very painful memory for Kelly.Eventually,Alex decided to get straight to the point.

Alex:So you what is this special gift you have that you need to go all the way to Los Angeles for?
Kelly:It’s just something I have to do,Alex.I’ve been away too long.

Alex noticed that Kelly was fidgeting with something around her neck.

Alex:What’s that?

Alex reached over to take a look at the stethoscope around Kelly’s neck.She noticed the word BULLDOG engraved on it.Automatically she vaguely remembered something that Annie told her once.But she couldn’t quite put her finger on it.Kelly immediately snatched it back and began hiding it in the neck part of the jacket she was wearing.

Kelly:This is just a gift one of the doctors gave me when I was in the hospital when I was very young.

Alex nodded but somehow she knew there was more to it than that.Then she remembered what Annie told her once and suddenly Alex realized what Kelly’s secret was,the secret life Kelly had lived before coming to Paradise Valley!Even if it was inconcieveable,it seemed to fit what Miss Harris had said about Kelly and why Kelly was returning to Los Angeles.

Alex:Kelly,your her aren’t you.You’re the Bulldog.

Kelly straightened up a little as if hit by a bolt of lightning.After a few moments,she turned to face Alex and nodded.

Then all hell broke loose.Suddenly the bus lurched as it was hit on the side by another car.The driver tried to regain control of the vehicle but to no avail.The bus skidded sideways and was hit by the car behind it near the rear.It spun out of control,off the highway,and into a ditch.
