The inside of the bus was in chaos.There were bodies everywhere and Kelly knew that she had to act quickly.Suddenly the years of experience kicked in and she was already into action.

Bus Driver:All right everyone stay calm.Nobody move.Help will be coming soon.We’re near a busy highway so it is most likely that somebody called 911.
Miss Harris:I’ve already got emergency services on the my cellular phone right now.
Bus Driver:So emergency services is on its way.

Miss Harris nodded.

Kelly:Can somebody please help me here?Oh,God Alex.

Annie:Alex!

Alex lay face down on the floor under the seat.When Kelly carefully turned her over she noticed a deep cut on the side of her forehead.Kelly immediately asked for some kind of cloth or bandage.The bus driver,Ted,took out his handy first aid kit he kept in the glove compartment in the front of the bus and retrieved a bandage from it.Kelly told Ray to use the bandage to apply pressure on Alex’s forehead wound.She then told Annie to hold Alex’s head and neck in a way that kept them stable.Kelly is about to reach for something in the inside pocket of the jacket she was wearing when she caught the scent of something that caused her great concern.

Kelly:Miss Harris,I think we might have to find a way to get everybody off the bus.I think I smell gasoline. Miss Harris and Ted smelled it too.
Ted:Miss Harris,help me get the emergency door at the back open Both Miss Harris and Ted managed to get the emergency exit in the back open and the students began quickly exiting the schoolbus as fast as they could.Annie,Ray,Miss Harris and Ted stayed behind and helped Kelly carefully carry Alex out of the vehicle.

Once out of the schoolbus,Alex was carefully placed on the ground at a safe distance from the vehicle.Then Kelly began to work on Alex.She took a penlight from the inside pocket of her jacket and examined the pupils of Alex’s eyes.Kelly could tell immediately from the slow pupil contraction that Alex had more than a mere head laceration.

Then Alex seemed to wake up a little but was delirious.She started mumbling something incoherently,mentioning Kelly and Dr. K.P. Andrews.Even though she knew that Alex even being a little conscious was a good sign,she knew also that Alex needed to get to a hospital right away.

Kelly:Nicole,whatever you do watch her closely.If there are any changes in her condition call me.

Nicole nodded and seemed very puzzled.She had noticed the stethoscope around Kelly’s neck and saw the name BULLDOG engraved on it.Why would Kelly be carrying around that particular stethoscope?she wondered.

Meanwhile,Kelly began checking out the rest of the students and the drivers and passengers of the other cars involved in the accident.Fortunately only Alex’s head injury was the only one life theatening at the moment.Only cuts and scrapes and a few broken bones were the major issues here and that was a relief.

Annie was also trying to provide as much first aid as possible but Kelly could tell that she wasn’t very good at it.She mostly let Annie try because Kelly couldn’t handle all the students at once and because Miss Harris was mostly with her.However,Miss Harris wasn’t with her now and Kelly immediately had to intervene.Annie was putting a tourniquet on Louis’ leg.Kelly immediately took the tourniquet off after pushing Annie aside.

Kelly:What the devil do you think you are doing?
Annie:I’m trying to stop the bleeding.
Kelly:Not this way your not.
Annie:What are you doing,he could bleed to death!

Kelly examined the wound on Louis’ thigh.It was bleeding steadly but she could tell that it was not deep enough to severe an artery.The fact that he had a strong leg pulse confirmed her diagnosis.

Kelly:It’s not deep enough.Just apply pressure on the wound using this bandage and you should be fine until a doctor can suture this up.

Before Annie could say anything Kelly grabbed her by the arm and led her aside.

Kelly:Look stop playing hero.When was the last time you took a first aid course?
Annie:I know what I’m doing.
Kelly:No,no you don’t know what you’re doing!If you did you would not have put that tourniquet on Louis’ leg which would have resulted in him losing it because the blood circulation would have been cut off!
Annie:That’s what I was trying to do!I was trying to stop the bleeding by reducing the circulation
Kelly:But you would have killed the leg!
Annie:I’m trying to save Louis’ life!What good is his leg if he is dead anyways!
Kelly:The only time you use a tourniquet is when there is an amputation!You never ever assume a cut,especially that one on Louis’ leg to be too severe that you must use a tourniquet!Only a doctor can make that assumption!
Annie:And you’re a doctor.

Much to Kelly’s relief Miss Harris chose that time to intervene.

Miss Harris:Annie,I think you better help Ray and Nicole watch Alex,okay. Annie:But
Miss Harris:No buts.Kelly knows what she is doing.

Annie was about to object but eventually relented.But she was very confused.Why was Miss Harris allowing Kelly to take over the situation?It was almost as if she belived that Kelly was trained to handle these situations.

Once Annie was restricted to watching Alex and acting as spectator to Kelly’s field work,Annie could see why Miss Harris trusted Kelly more.Kelly seemed a little more level headed than expected and handled one problem after another with remakable efficiency and professionalism.But something about Kelly’s actions seemed unusual and Annie decided once and for all that she would confront Kelly about them.

Aside from the fact that Kelly was handling this emergency as if she had been through this many times before,she seemed to do a bit more than any teenager with first aid training would normally do.For example,Kelly would do a more thorough examination of wounds and broken bones.She would also,albeit carefully check the mobility of the injured body part as well as the pulse.Not unlike what a doctor would

The paramedics arrived a few minutes later.Annie noticed that the ambulances came from Los Angeles County General.They were fairly close to the city when the accident happened.Kelly and Miss Harris greeted them and gave them their assessment of the situation and the paramedics went to work.Eventually everyone was loaded into the ambulances save Kelly,Miss Harris,and herself.It was this time that Annie decided to confront Kelly.

Annie:Kelly,where did you learn to treat the injured like that.
Kelly:In a first aid course,where else?
Annie:Even the best first aid courses don’t give you the amount of medical knowledge or expertise you have shown today!
Kelly:Annie I don’t have time for this!I’ll explain it to you when we get to County General!

Then Miss Harris intervened between them.

Miss Harris:Annie why don’t you go with Louis in the other ambulance.
Annie:I want to go with Alex.
Kelly:I’ll go with Louis.

And with that Kelly went to the other of the two remaining ambulances on the scene. As they left the scene,Annie suddenly realized something but couldn’t quite believe it. Could Kelly be who Annie suspected she might be?It seemed inconcieveable but it would explain everything that happened so far.

The first thing Alex saw when she woke up was Kelly’s face.Alex then realized she was in a crowded hospital room with doctor’s and nurses examining her and sticking her with needles.She had a headache the size of Texas and she noticed that something was in her mouth. She tried to get up and remove whatever it was that was in her mouth but found herself being restrained by Kelly and the people around her.

Kelly:Don’t try to move!Do you remember what happened Alex?
Alex memory was a bit whoozy but then she nodded.
Kelly:Our bus got into a car accident and you hit your head hard and was knocked out. You probably have a concussion.

Alex reached out and touched the side of Kelly’s forehead which was bandaged but had a small blood stain on it.Kelly had been so engrossed with helping everybody else that she hadn’t noticed that she had a head wound,although not as serious as Alex’s.It was only through Miss Harris and the paramedics that she found out.

Dr. Weiss:Kelly maybe you should have yourself checked out and have that cut looked at. We can handle this from here.

Kelly left the trauma room and was greeted by Annie,Ray,Louis,Nicole and Robin. They were of course naturally worried about Alex but Annie and Nicole seemed to eye watch her very carefully which made Kelly nervous.

Kelly:Alex has a concussion and they will have to do a CAT scan of her brain to see how serious her injury is.But the good news is she is conscious and alert.
Robin:But for how long.She could burst an artery in her brain,she could go into a coma
Kelly:Robin,you’re not helping her much by being a pessimist.She needs your support right now and the last thing she needs is for you coming up with ways she could die of.
Ray:When can we see her?
Kelly:That would be up to Rick…,I mean Dr. Weiss whose treating her now.I better have this wound checked out.

And with that Kelly immediately went to find a doctor who would be available to treat her.She could still feel Annie and Nicole’s cold stare on her back but just ignored it.Kelly then recognized an old friend.He was an old,plump,baldly man whose seemingly youthful face lit up once he recognized his young friend.

Kelly:Dr. Kramer.
Dr. Kramer:Kelly?!

The two friends hugged each other warmly.

Dr. Kramer:How long has it been,a year?

Kelly nodded.He then noticed the cut on Kelly’s forehead.
Dr. Kramer:What happened to you?
Kelly:I was in that schoolbus accident.
Dr. Kramer:I thought I recognized your voice over the EMT radio.We better have that looked at.Nurse.

Kramer motioned for the nearest nurse who answered immediately.He asked her to find Kelly an examination room so Kelly could be treated immediately.The nurse complied.

Kelly:Oh,Dr. Kramer,I’m
Dr. Kramer:I know.I got the message you sent me yesterday.I’m sorry I couldn’t answer.I had a staff meeting at the time.We’ll talk later.

Kelly was ushered into an examination room and told to wait.Ten minutes later,an intern arrived and treated her.As it turned out Kelly suffered a minor head wound and had no concussion or skull fracture and was officially discharged.However,Kelly did not leave the hospital.

Louis:"Stop trying to play hero" she said.It was amazing.
Ray:Man if I didn’t know better it was as if Kelly was possessed by some guardian angel or something.I’m not even sure if it was Kelly Phillips at all!

Alex listened to her friends recounting of Kelly’s heroic actions after the schoolbus accident.She had been moved to a separate private hospital room for observation after her CAT scan showed no intercranial(in the skull) bleeding.Alex felt she was getting better although she still had a throbbing headache.Her and the rest of the students’ parents had already been notified about the schoolbus accident and were on their way to Los Angeles.

Annie:You know I could have sworn that Kelly had the knowledge and skills of a paramedic or perhaps even a doctor.
Louis:She even had a stethoscope.You know the one she was trying to hide in her coat when she first entered the schoolbus this morning.
Ray:Yeah,I noticed that too.
Alex:Annie,did you notice the name that was engraved on it,it said BULLDOG.

Annie suddenly began to realize that the revelation that she had come up with before they left the accident site was not unrealistic after all.It was all starting to make sense.It seemed to explain Kelly’s behaviour for the past 24 hours.

Nicole:But why would Kelly be carrying a stethoscope like that.Only Dr. K.P. Andrews carries a stethoscope with that engraving.
Annie:I remember reading somewhere that Andrews was her mother’s maiden name.

Annie saw recognition in Alex’s face and Annie realized it too.The initials K.P. might actually be the famous teenage doctor’s initials!And there was one person they knew who had the same initials!

Nicole:But that would mean that K.P. was her initials.No!There is no way it could be her!
Annie:I think it is her!It all makes sense!
Louis:Wait a minute!Am I to understand that you believe Dr. K.P. Andrews is actually
Kelly:Me.I’m Dr. K.P. Andrews.

Everyone turned around to see Kelly Phillips at the door to Alex’s hospital room.She had been eavesdropping on the entire conversation the whole time,but she was no longer in her street clothes.This time she was in surgical scrubs and wearing a doctor’s jacket.
