Best/Worst Episode Ever
This summer, I ran a second poll on what Simpsons fans, mostly alt.tv.simpsons readers, consider the best and worst episodes of all time. Click here for the results of the original poll, conducted in the fall of 1997. There will be a third poll starting the day after the Season 10 finale, and ending the day before the Season 11 premiere (yes, there will be a Season 11).On the Best front, the former front-runner, "Last Exit to Springfield," has plunged all the way down to fifth place, to be replaced by Season 6's classic futuristic love story "Lisa's Wedding."
In second place is another Lisa-centered episode, "Lisa's Substitute," a touching first-crush tale starring Dustin Hoffman as a substitute teacher. The previous second-place episode, "Deep Space Homer," got only one vote this time.
Third place went to "Homer Badman," in which Homer is accused of sexually harassing a graduate student. It got only one vote more than fourth-place contenders, perennial favorites "Bart vs. Australia," "Homie the Clown," "Homer the Heretic," "The Springfield Files," and "A Streetcar Named Marge."
Now for the bad news (at least for fans of the episodes voted Worst). The overwhelming choice for Worst Episode Ever was last season's badly-received musical clip show "All Singing, All Dancing," garnering 26 Worst votes, more than one-fifth of the total Worst consensus. Voters considered it irritating, pointless and poorly made.
In second place is Season 9's very unpopular "The Principal and the Pauper," a soap opera-style episode in which Principal Seymour Skinner is revealed to be a street rebel named Armin Tamzarian. This episode made first place for Worst in the original poll. Previous second-place "loser," "The Simpsons Spinoff Showcase," tumbled to a distant fourth place.
Third "worst place" was given to the first season's "Some Enchanted Evening," the first episode ever produced.
