The total length of the borders is 2245 kilometres of which 1181 are land, 668 kilometres are river and 378 kilometres are sea borders. Turkey, Greece, ex-Yugoslavia and Romania are the neighbor countries.

The mean annual temperature varies between plus 14 celsius degrees and minus 3 celsius degrees; the highest temperature ever has been 45.2 celsius degrees and the lowest - 38.3 celsius degrees below zero.

Hills and mountains are the predominant topographic features; forests constitute 28 per cent of the territory. Mountains take almost a quarter of the country's territory and alrgely determine its relief, agriculture, transport network and to an extent, the character of the Bulgarian. The 16 mountains in Bulgaria lend unique charm.

The Black Sea is a promising factor in future tourist projects. The coastal line is 4090 km, the average depth is 1130 m and the greatest depth is 2245 m. Because of the low content of salt, the sea water is very translucent. Its climate is mild and pleasant; the summer mean water temperature is 23 celsius degrees. The beach is long, clean and the sand is fine and golden. haze occurs seldom; there are no tides. Because below 150 metres the water abounds in hydrogen sulphide, wildlife is scanty but there are no sharks. The Bulgarian shore is high, with forests, picturesque and fertile. It abounds in big port cities like Varna and Bourgas, amazing small towns as if coming from an earthly dreamland like Sozopol and Nesebar; modern rezorts like Albena, Sunny Beach, Golden sands and Balchik.
