Directions: From US-50/301 exit 27 to 450 South to the traffic light. Left on MD 648 to traffic
light entrance to Naval Station, go thru the gate to two large anchors on the right. This is
the campground entrance. Straight on and left at the next gate down the bottom of the hill
on the right is Bldg. 89 Recreation Center. Advise calling ahead for reservations.

Input from members:Just spent a week at the campground a NAS Pax River.
Check In was done at the campground itself via a full time host. The area
is wooded and secluded. The golf course (very nice) and fishing pier are
close. The base is large and offeres a full range of facilities. There is
not a hospital on base however, just a clinic that offers no emergency
care. The campground offers elec. (20 & 30 Amp) and water. There is no
dump station and one must go to a seperate building about 4 to 5 miles
away to dump. There are no bathroom or shower facilities at the
campground, with chem. toilets in several locations. The campground is
infested with poison ivy so be careful, especially with pets as they will
transfer the oils to your RV and you!! Flying insects can be a problem in
the summer, during our late Sept. stay we had few problems however.
If you want quiet during the week this may cause some problems -
the Aviation Testing Center and Test Pilot School start about 0800 and fly
until 2000 or so, we know it is the sound of freedom and didn't bother us!
The cost is very reasonable at only $11.00, stay a week and one
day is free. The closest camping facility to here is Soloman's Island Naval
Recreation Center and runs between $18 and & $23 per day with no
discounts other than a monthly rate. The facilities there are wonderful
however. When all is said and done we enjoyed our visit here very much.
The area is rich in history and lots of state parks. The crabbing is great!

Input from members: My family recently stayed for a long weekend
at Solomon's Navy Rec Center and will be spending this Labor Day weekend there
also. It is a great place for families. They have an aquatics center that
consists of four swimming pools, a very nice fishing pier, bike rentals, boat
rentals, mini golf, planned activities on the weekends and this is to just
name a few. We enjoyed it because our children, 14 and 10 could stay busy
having fun all weekend. There is 24 hour security onsite. The sites are clean
but do lack shade, there is a grill at each site also.
The staff was outstanding!!!! Everyone we came in contact treated us as VIP's.
Their rates have changed, they are as follows;Summer Rates;
Full hookup 36.00W/E 32.00
This was based on two adults and two children. It also includes a leisure pass
for all members in your party that give you access to all the activities.
Otherwise the leisure pass is 5.00 each.
We felt it was a good bargain for a nice relaxing weekend where the kids are
safe to run about and have fun. I will get a full price sheet on our next trip
and if you would like I will fax it to you.

Solomon's Island is perhaps the best of the military campgrounds that I
have stayed at, putting most civilian camps to shame.
It is located near the junction of the Patuexent River and the Chesapeake
Bay, accross the river from Patuexent River Naval Air Station. Naturally
fishing is plentiful with a fishing pier on site. There is a town close by
with dining facilities that are very good.
There are 146 Complete hook ups $21.00, electric and water there
are 152 @ $18. Weekly and monthly rates are available. Commissary and
PX/BX facilities about five miles away.

Though no longer a member of SMART, I feel compelled to write. We visited
Solomon NRC campground the first week of July 2000. It was a beautiful
location, but somewhat disappointing when it came to campsites. Ours was OK,
but nothing special. We did have full hookups and were quite comfortable,
but in general, it wasn't worth the trip from Indiana. The surrounding area
is nice, but typically touristy.
