Notes: Camping $5.00 with Golden Age Passport.
Input from Members: Check out sites carefully. Some have only 20 Amp and some have 30 & 50 Amp.
The name of the road into the campground is Campbell Rd.
Fort A. P. Hill Camp Site - between Fredericksburg and Richmond Virginia -
10 miles off I95.
about twenty sites, last time I was there it was electrical hook up only.
Fort A P Hill is easy to find, campground is not but it is close to
Garrison Headquarters. Site is entirely open, no facilities available.
Fee was $10.00 a night if one can find the MWR office open - I have never
found it open however so usually just mail funds to MWR later.
A P Hill is a reserve National Guard training area and is virtually closed
except during the summer. I do not know if there is a PX or commissary
available.
A P Hill is reachable from highway 17, Highway 301. The exit from I 95 is
marked.

We spent a week in The Colony Travel Park in September 97.
What a great Travel Park! Recently redone and all sites are hard stand.
This base is like a living Museum and it gave me "goose flesh" every
time I drove though it. The homes, buildings and restored old Fort
and Casemate Museum (free) are a must to see!
This is probably the nicest combination of Travel Park and Base we
have stayed at in the NC/VA area. I highly recommend a day trip
to this historic facility even if you came not get an RV site
(they are in high demand). It is also within a 30 min drive to
Colonial Williamsburg, Bush Gardens, Jamestown and Yorktown.

We spent a week at Lunga Park (Officer's Section) in September 97.
We had a grand time in rustic Lunga Park. Thought I would pass
on some info about it so you would know what to expect.
Advantages:
1. Isolated and scenic.
2. Located on a nice lake with descent shore fishing (we caught
about 50 Brim). Boats can be rented at MWR office on the lake.
3. In Sept there were not many people there.
4. 45 min from D.C. area.
5. Great for tent and pop up camping.
6. Deer, Geese and Ducks are common in the park/lake.
7. Playground for the youngsters.
Disadvantages: Not very RV friendly
1. Only about 3 of the 12 odd sites can handle anything much
over 25'. Two of these sites require some difficult backing to
get there, but it is worth the hassle if your staying for a few days.
2. No reservations accepted so you could show up and not be able to
get one of the RV sites.
3. Only some of the sites have 30 amp so check the box before you
get in the site if you need you A/C.
4. Electric boxes may be far from the site.
5. Make sure you have over 100' of H20 hose, some water hydrates
are a LONG way from the site.
6. Campsite is accessed by a 1/2 mile dusty gravel road.
7. Get out and recon the Camp ON FOOT before pulling in. There
are two spurs that will not allow a rig to turn around and you'll
have to back out. No fun.
8. No bathhouse, STINKY Out Houses only.
Summary: We had GREAT family camping here, but it is best to
show up on a off season weekday to get one of the few RV sites
if you have a large rig. In my opinion, this Fam Camp is
better suited if you're going to stay for several days.
If you're just pulling in for the night, it is out of the way
and may not be worth the hassles of getting there and into a tight site.
Hope you enjoy Lunga Park as much as we did!!

Big Bethel FamCamp (VA10A)
Updated: Thursday, June 22, 2000
Street Atlas 7 Map (Zipped)
Directions: The recommended way to the campground is by getting off I-64 at
exit 261A and go West on Hampton Rd. for less than one mile to hwy 600 or Big Bethel Rd.
Then North about 1 1/2 miles on Big Bethel Rd to Saunders Rd. There is
a traffic light there and you can only turn left. Turn left and go about 1/3
mile where the entrance to park is on the right hand side of the road at a sign "Hidden Road".
The park is well indicated but there is a curve in the road just before you
get to the entrance.
When you get to the camp there is an office where registration forms are
located. You fill the form out and inclose one copy with the payment of the
number of days you plan to stay in an envelope that is provided. Deposit
that envelope in a slot that is locate by the office. Select a vacant spot
and hook up. There is water and electricity at the sites. There is a dump
station next to the office.
