Last day... :-( :'-(
We had our last breakfast at "our" German Bakery" and an incredible thing happened when we were leaving the shop in front of it, where Maria Jose went to buy some vests - we met the taxi driver who had kept my lost things! His excitement was as big as mine. I had already written him a letter with my last dollar bills and some ruppees also. We asked him to come with us to Sherpa Guesthouse to pick our things and then take us to the airport. I was able to get back the letter to the driver - I had delivered it at the reception of the guesthouse so they would post it. They were about to take it to the post office... If I hadn't been able to get back the letter I would be in an embarassing situation with the driver, as we had no money left to tip him. On the last minute, I put apart some clothes and a sack to give him.
Goodbye to Mansoor and his brothers, taxi to the airport, our trip was ending.
We had some trouble getting money to pay the airport taxes, as we had only travel checks and Visa card and there wasn't any place to change money with that. Finally someone noticed our problem and offered us to change portuguese money (escudos) - he was coming to Portugal in a few monthes, so he would need escudos then. I guess our luck worked again - I bet that there wouldn't be much more persons knowing what escudos are in that airport apart from him.
In the lobby we talked for a while with an american woman in her 50's about our stay, namely about our mini trek. She had an agency which organised treks in Nepal and she had done some treks already, not only in Nepal, but also in Tibet. She told us that the Muktinath area is much like most of Tibet. She told us also that we run into some danger by flying to Jomsom and started climbing the same day. We could have suffered from severe altitude sickness.
The airplane was full. The trip was a little bit shaky, but nothing too frightening. We arrived in Bangkok at dusk.
We spend three pleasant days there! Strangely our calm mood seemed to fit very well in that frantic and burning hot town, with its streets full of smells, people and their singing talk, food, tuk-tuk's, cars, traffic jams and wats (budhist temples) in every corner.
The end. |
