| Strelitzia and Blue
Leaves
It was my birthday, and being in
a somewhat meloncholy mood, I took myself into the garden, where the Bird of
Paradise plants had burst into bloom in early spring. Delighted, I sat in the
sun and sketched, not knowing that my sketch would eventually turn into a
tapestry design, a cushion, to ever remind me of days with a hint of chill, but
with enough sun to gladden the spirit. |

Azalia and Bird of ParadiseThe one cushion, however looked rather lonely sitting solitary on my couch.
It was in desperate need of a partner. So to the wild garden again I ventured,
an Azalia bush nearby had burst into bloom, and a
sprig of the flower laden plant had drooped over a brand new Bird of Paradise flower. |

Inspired now to stitch and becoming
quite addicted to the joy of working one's own designs, a new theme was required.
Sitting innocently under the coffee table was "Landmarks of Mapmaking" an
inspirational book. This tapestry is based on
early Dutch maps of Western Australia circa 1670. |
| Van Diemen's
Land
Its a national scandal in
Australia that often one very important part of our country is forgotten on our
maps. Tasmania, previously known
as Van Diemen's Landt by the Dutch was mapped by Abel Tasman. This
design is for all of those Tasmanians who deserve to be remembered. |
