DIAMOND HEAD LIGHTHOUSE

Diamond Head Lighthouse - compliments of Pat
Thanks to Pat for this great photo

We had a few hours during our last morning on Oahu to quickly visit the Diamond Head lighthouse. We left the hotel early and headed east on the road that follows the ocean all the way around the island. We drove right in front of Diamond Head peak then passed it but never saw a lighthouse. We stopped in a seaside neighborhood and walked out onto the beach to see if we could catch a glimpse of it from there. A nice local lady walking her dog on the beach told us it was "back that way", where we had just come from. Well we were stumped, but we hopped back in the car and headed west. Coming from that direction, we saw the lighthouse and finally realized why we had passed it. It's shielded with foliage coming from Waikiki and we didn't see it for the trees.

We parked on the shoulder of the road and crossed the street to the light. There is a yard of sorts next to it where I could stand to take pictures but the light itself was gated in the front and we didn't see anyone around to ask if we could come closer. There is a nice plaque hanging on the gate out front which describes the light and gives a history of it. The light is 55 feet high and was built in 1917. It is currently the home of the Commander of the Fourteenth Coast Guard District. There might not be an official keeper of this light anymore but there was a cute, fuzzy black/calico cat who greeted us and kept us company as we took pictures so we dubbed the cat "the keeper of the light".

That was all the time we had left to see the sights of Oahu, we had to get back and catch a plane that would take us to the King Kamehameha Hotel on the Kona Coast for the second half of our Hawaiian adventure.

Next stop: the Big Island of Hawaii and the Kona Coast.
