Makapuu Lighthouse

ShorelineAfter leaving Hanauma Bay, we drove along the oceanside road toward the Makapuu lighthouse. We stopped at one spot and walked down onto some flat rocks to get closer to the scenery. In the picture to the left, you can see one lone man who braved the rocky terrain to fish by the ocean's edge farther down the shore from where we were. I love this picture, it's such a contrast between the waves and the shore.

Following the road a little farther, we finally found the parking area, if you could call it that, for the lighthouse. From info I had read, I thought it would be a short trek up a steep path to get to this lighthouse but, when we pulled off where others were already parked and looked up the mountain, we could see a faint line which we assumed was the path far far away! The lighthouse was not visible but I assumed it would be right around the corner when we got to the top of the path. So off we went, optimistic that we could make it up there with no problem.

stark terrain cactus above the Pacific Well I was wrong about a lot of things that day. Not only was the walk longer than expected, the lighthouse was much further away than "just around the corner". Darrell didn't have as much trouble as I did, he's used to being on his feet, but I sit all day in an office. I was really beat by the time we rounded the corner and even more discouraged when I saw a lot more path stretching out ahead of us. Luckily there was a great breeze at this point of the path, coming in from the Pacific Ocean, so it was easier to press on with the wind cooling us down a bit. The walk wasn't all bad, the foliage on the way up was stark, but a few interesting cactus type plants broke up the monotony of this desert like terrain. The view from the Pacific side was beautiful and I admired it for quite awhile since I stopped to rest when we reached that side!

The top of Makapuu - compliments of PatFinally, the top was in sight, no going back now. Darrell went on ahead and I followed slowly. We saw a gate and another path leading around the mountain. Could that be the lighthouse, that small tower at the end of that path? Yes it was, proving I was wrong about something else that day. I'm used to tall towers, like the ones in Florida, so this short one surprised me. Of course, it's so high up on this mountain that it doesn't need height and, after that long walk, any lighthouse looked good to me! I was glad we hadn't given up and gone back before we saw it since it was spectacular in its own way. (Thanks to Pat for this nice picture)

I was so tired, I almost didn't go any higher, I had climbed the mountain that far and had seen the light, so why go up top? Darrell went on and, after catching my breath, I decided to follow him to the lookout area at the top where there were some wonderful views. From one angle, we looked back toward land and we could see the ocean to the left and right of us and all the way back along the coast. We spent some more time up top, admiring the view, so I could rest before the long trek back down that steep path. Actually going down wasn't as bad as going up and didn't take nearly as much time. What a relief!

We arrived back at the car hours after we had started our climb and, by then, we were hungry so off we went to find a good restaurant. We drove north and came to the town of Waimanalo and saw a place called KimoZ Family Restaurant. I had my first (and last) taste of poi there. I tried to like it but, even when I added sugar, it still didn't appeal to me. I figured I had to try it because what would a trip to Hawaii be without tasting poi?

On the way back, we stopped at the Halona Blow Hole. During some seasons, the spray coming up thru this hole is spectacular, or so we're told. In August, the water is calmer I suppose and all we saw was some mist and also some water coming up thru it. On the left is the water, on the right is the spray - look close, it's there!

I was glad to be heading back to the hotel by that time, my legs ached and it had been a long day of snorkeling and climbing. We crashed at the hotel and were asleep by 9:00 PM. We had more adventures to tackle the next day!

Next stop, Pali Lookout and Byodo-In Temple.
