PEARL HARBOR

The Memorial close-up

We got up early and headed to Pearl Harbor on the first full day of our vacation. The memorial could be seen across the water as we strolled thru the grounds while waiting to board the boat. There is a nice museum and gift shop that kept us busy while we waited.

The Memorial from across the bay

window at the wallThis impressive memorial was built as a tribute to the USS Arizona crew who lost their lives on December 7th, 1941. The architect, Alfred Preis, designed it to sag slightly in the middle but stand "strong and vigorous at the ends" so that it "expresses initial defeat and ultimate victory" per the brochure we received when we arrived. Once there, we only had about 15 minutes to look around before the boat took us back to shore, but it was enough to see the remains of the USS Arizona below us and to view the names of those who were lost in the battle. I was most impressed with the wall of names, at the far end. The windows were such an interesting design and the sun came thru the spaces to shine on the marble.

leis left in tribute

I also noticed there were many leis hanging on the brass posts in front of the wall, left there as a respectful tribute to those who died during the battle.

The men enjoyed seeing all the different battleships tied up at the docks and we all enjoyed seeing this memorial to part of our history.
