"In 1899, the streets of New York City echoed with the voices of newsies, peddlin' the
newspapers of Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst, and other giants of the
newspaper world. On every corner you saw 'em carrying the banner, bringing you the news
for a penny a pape. Poor orphans and runaways, the newsies were a ragged army, without a
leader. Until one day, all that changed..."
Welcome to New York City: July, 1899. Man has not yet walked on the
moon, Hitler has not yet murdered millions of Jews, aliens have not
yet invaded movie theatres on July 4th......even though these would
make some great headlines for our Newsies. The times are not easy, not
on the boys, or on anyone else. But one thing is for sure....its a fine
life, carryin the banner.
A day in the life....
Most of our
Newsies
wake up bright and early after a good night's sleep
at the
Newsboy's Lodging House.
After washing up they get over to
Newspaper Alley to pick
up their papes for the day, then they hit the
streets
to sell their papes. After all their papes are gone, our boys will
head over to
Tibby's
to grab a bite to eat. At the end of the day, they all go back to the
lodging house for dinner and to sleep.
