At the top of this mountain on Doi Suthep, you will find all of Chaing Mai at your feet. Doi Suthep can be reached by road from Chiang Mai. From the car park, at the temple base visitors can climb 309 steps to reach the pagodas or there is a tram Once inside the temple grounds; visitors must take off their shoes. Visitors must be appropriately dressed. The original copper plated chedi is the most holy area of the temple grounds. Within the site are pagodas, statues, bells and shrines. Aspects of the Wat draw from both Buddhism and Hinduism. There is a model of the Emerald Buddha and a statue of the Hindu God Ganesh. Views of Chiang Mai can be seen on the other side of the temple.
You can withing a day or so reach many spots of beauty. Among these are, The Mae Klang Waterfall and the MaiSai area a place of georgous natural beauty!
Mahout & Elephant..
The north is teak country where you can still see the elephants work in the forrest. We visited the training camps where these wonderful animals are taught their skills.
Our next stop is Chaing Rai the drive was simply wonderful.... To the north, just a short hop by plane or as we chose to do by car was a 3hr. ride by car lies. Chaing Rai and the "Golden Triangle', that spellbinding spot where the borders of Thailand, Burma, and Laos meet. With excellant hotel accommodations, Chaing Rai is a very good base for exploring the far north. The town itself has many interesting temples to see.
Between Mae Sai and Chaing Rai are some of the most stunning jungle covered mountains, their slopes dotted with hilltribe villages that interested me the most.
