Rafting Pictures
Since Honduras has many rivers, you can go rafting in a number of places. However, only Rio Cangrejal near La Ceiba offers regular half-day river rafting excursions (to find La Ceiba, take a look at the map of Honduras). Rio Cangrejal runs through the national park, Pico Bonito. Rafting, therefore, is more than an adrenaline rush, it is also a wildlife experience.
The pictures below illustrates a river rafting excursion I had with Mr. Christian Lagier in winter, 1998. We both bought a trip with transportation, guides, boat, and lunch included. It cost $50 for each of us. And it was well worth the money.
Right, on the picture below, the two rafting experts, Christian and Bo, are showing that they are ready for rafting. Behind, the two guides are fixing the four person boat.
Once we got in the boat, one of the guides acted as captain. The other did whatever did told us to do. The orders could be "Forward", "Stop!", "Right back", "Left back", "High Side" (meaning that everybody goes to one side of the boat to avoid it tipping over).
We are finally on the river and it is looking good. At times of weak current, we could look at the surrounding rainforest, Pico Bonito, and on the huge rocks flanking the river.
Here we come rafting away, approaching one of the big blocks of granite, nicely polished by the river. Christian is in the front, I am in the back. We are getting into a part with rapids (parts of the tiver with very strong current.
Action! The river narrows between two big blocks of rock, and we are in heavy turbulence. It looks deadly, but the boats are actually constructed in a way that one feels pretty safe and firmly fastened. We tipped over once and everybody landed in the water, but no harm was done. Up in the boat we went, and on with the trip. One last note: the river changes dramatically with the rain. These pictures are taken at a time in which it had not rained for several days.
