In September 1989 twelve members of the Alberta branch of Shorinji Kempo winged our way from Calgary to Osaka, Japan. We were picked up at the airport and taken to the Dai Ichi (number one) Hotel, a circular hotel in downtown Osaka. With breakfast we began our lessons on how things are done in Japan. They tried to serve us a western breakfast ,and while the ingredients were close, I found it hard to take cold bacon and eggs with smoked fish and rice. Most of us tried the traditional Japanese breakfasts from then on.
