Atlanta Olympics 1996
Qualified to compete:
Watson Nyambek (1st Malaysian to dip below 10.40s in 100m; ranked 17th in the world in his age group - the top ranking guy is from Japan with a time of 10.2++); time progress 10.48->10.45->10.42->10.38->10.33->10.31 (approaching Talal Mansoor's standard)
But...The top decathletes in the world would just laugh at these achievements. Looking at our national records, they might very well say: "I've got to concentrate on 10 events, and you just 1 or 2, and still I beat the heck out of you! Wimps!". Just look at Daley Thompson's personal bests (the best decathlete in the world in the 80's). His 100m PB is 10.26s, and that was more than 10 years ago! Watson & Azmi wake up! His long jump PB is 8.01m. Our national record has never broken the 8m barrier, and I'm wondering if we ever will. Our current long jumpers struggle to even clear 7.5. Even the elite women are catching up on us. Jackie Joyner-Kersee's world record is 7.52m, only a few inches off our MEN's NR. Malu la kalau kalah dengan perempuan! And just to show Daley's versatility, his high jump PB is 2.10m! Imagine, a man of his size can scale that height. Quite a few other decathletes can beat our high jump's NR, one being Schenk from Germany who scaled 2.27m at the 1988 Olympics.
Olympics '96: The first time I ever saw Watson NOT smiling was when he was on the starting blocks of the 1st round, 100 meters heats, Atlanta, Olympics 1996. He was the smallest guy there, and competing against Michael Green (?), amongst others. 10.55? Not good enough Wats. Nur Herman: why you always seem to be sick on the big day? Kum Zee's 2.15 good enough? NOT! Mega massive extreme big flop guys.
Sukma 1996
When it really matters, Watson walks all over Azmi. Nuff said. Azmi, 10.56? Forget Atlanta. Watson, just don't blow it again.
Asian Track & Field 1998
Watson proved he's the 2nd fastest man in Asia by getting the silver in the 100. Clocked 10.42. 1st is from China (10.39 I think). With this, he proved he's on par with Malaysian greats like Jega and Rabuan. Nurherman still hasn't broken the requirement for the Commonwealth games. Supermum G Shanti bagged bronze in the 100 (11.6+), and if I'm not mistaken, 200 too.
