Christianso is the biggest in the scenic Ertholomene cluster to which also islands Frederikso and Graesholm belong. The island would have probably remained a habitat of waterfowl until today if Christian the Fifth, the monarch of Denmark, had not decided to build in the 17th century a fortress and a naval base on the site. At the beginning, only 115 soldiers were posted, in the end more than four hundred. For about 200 years the fortress served wonderfully; it guarded sea routes and remained unconquerable. It was not before 1863 that soldiers had to be evacuated because of the... cholera epidemic.
Nowadays, the island is inhabited by 120 people, mostly fishermen and their families. The cluster is peaceful and quiet, but not during holidays, when it is visited by many tourists arriving to see the monuments and the unique landscape.
