From the Tropics to the Timber.
(so to speak)
Welcome! I'm Ohiococonut. Born on the Island of Guam, now living in the country in a small town in Ohio. Below are just a few of the pictures I have taken over the years in the country.
Here's a couple of pictures of "Spike" a pet racoon I had. I started raising him when he was 6 weeks old. He's about 1 year old here. He was returned to the wild a few years later because he got too big & I felt it was time to release him.
How would you like to find one of these in YOUR backyard? This little guy couldn't have been more than 8 hours old. Mama came back to claim him a few hours later.
This buck didn't care for it when I came out the back door, so he's headed for the woods. He'd been feeding on apples in our yard.
Here's a closer look at him. You can't tell, but he's a small 6 point, about 1 1/2 years old.
I'd woke up one frosty morning to find this guy guarding what was left of a gut pile from a buck I had harvested a couple of days earlier. Some how he had lost his left eye & was unable to fly because he was to weak from not being able to feed. He waited until the sun thawed out the remains before he began his feast & stayed around for a couple of days until he regained enough strength to fly.
Click on any one of these "thumbnails" to get a larger view. Incidentally, it's a Red Tail Hawk.
This was taken the second day when he was able to fly.
These photos were not taken with a zoom lens. They were taken about 6 ft. from the bird. At one time I was within arms reach of him watching him eat. Apparently he was too hungry to care. Had it not been for what was left in the old garden spot, I believe he would have starved to death. About 3 weeks later another "pile" was left & he returned to feast again. I never saw him after that.
This guy I have affectionately named "Amos". All of the bucks I have mounted have names & I hope to post their pictures in tribute to them. He was taken in Colorado back in '91. A few friends & I decided to go on a hunting trip to Colorado to hunt Mule Deer & Elk. I was fortunate enough to take him the first morning out during the second season. The only problem was, I was 5 miles from camp half way down a canyon & the only way out was the way I went in, walk. We all estimated his weight at 300lbs. field dressed. This was also confirmed by a Game Warden who later came into camp just to check on things. He sports a 5x4 rack. Not big by trophy standards but a trophy to me, none the less. I saw a few Elk but nothing close enough to shoot at. Colorado has some of the most beautiful country I have ever seen! Some day I hope to return.
