In 1954-1961 49 motor ships were built for Volga and Yenisei routes.
All motor ships of project 588 (except m/s "Valentina Tereshkova" burned in 1978 ) worked till 1991. Then some motor ships were removed from operation when some routes were closed, but a large part of them is still in service. Some vessels were modernised to increase the comfort for the passengers. 5 ships operate on regular routes Moscow - Astrakhan and Nizhny Novgorod - Astrakhan, 2 ships operate on combined route Krasnoyarsk - Dudinka, all other ships operate on cruise lines.
