Dannevirke

Affectionately known among the youth as DanneVegas, situated in central NZ, 75 min sth of Hastings, 50 min east of Palmerston North. Dannevirke was named by the early settlers "Danes' works", from Danee: Dane and Works: A fortified structure, such as a fortress. Prior to European settlement, the Maori of the Rangitane and Ngati Kahungunu lived in the area along the rivers and streams, fishing and hunting in the bountiful native bush. The Makirikiri Marae and the Aotea Meeting House hold spectacular carvings illustrating the Maori history of the area. European settlement began in 1872 when the Government introduced immigrants to fell the thick native bush in the area and open up the route between the Hawke's Bay and Manawatu. Thirteen Danish and eight Norwegian families arrived in Napier and trekked south to where the town is now located. In 1917 a fire destroyed much of the town centre. The town was rebuilt and Dannevirke is now the largest urban area in the Tararua district with a population of 5514, servicing the surrounding rural communities and a growing number of tourists. Dannevirke proudly retains its Scandinavian heritage as is evident in the street names and building themes, most notably the windmill in High Street. The town is becoming a popular stopping point for travellers on SH 2 due to the growing number of cafes and eateries. The scenic 8ha domain features a deer park, picnic areas, rose gardens, and an aviary. The Ruahine Forest Park lies to the west.
