Nightlife and fun things!
This is not a hard area to get into, but then again it is. The reason for
this being is that there are sooooooooo many things you can do, and I can't list
them all. Cancun is a resort after all, and you probably won't have any
difficulties finding something to do. But just in case you get stuck or don't
know where to start, here is a list of things I know of that are available for
some fun. Oh and please remember that all prices are subject to change and some
require an extra 10% tax added. In fact, use this page as an estimate only. I
have not been able to get my hands on any pamphlets in almost a year, so the
prices may have gone up or down. Most of these companies I am sure will be in
business for years and I still hear about them but they may change their
schedules or programs. I hope that this site will remain mostly up to date on
its own but if you notice a big blunder, please inform me!
Many thanks to the Cancun Tips Magazine and the Mexican Caribbean Magazine,
as well as the hundreds of pamphlets I have collected from different businesses
and government sources.

Nightlife
Things like water skiing, parasailing, knee boarding, bodysurfing, snorkeling,
diving, volleyball, swimming, big bicycle riding, and countless others are some
of the fun activities available through hotels and private businesses. So if you
are one of those people who are interested here is how to start.
First of all, ask your hotel if they offer any kind of water sports (usually
most of the beach side hotels do) and get a schedule and list of prices. Easy
enough, but if your hotel does not offer sports, ask for information on places
that do -- even look them up in the phone book or ask other tourists. It would
be a good idea to shop around as well, and get comparative prices if you want to
save money.
Aquaworld
I believe that Aquaworld is one of the better businesses and they offer a

There are countless tours offered for great snorkeling and diving. Again, your
hotel would probably know more than I do about which companies are the best,
where they go, what times, prices and details like that. But I do know that the
best snorkeling and diving areas are off the coasts of Isla Mujeres, Cozumel and
Xcaret, oh and a great place to dive is the cave of the sharks (ask the tour
places if they go there). Just remember these two things if you decide to go:
Divers: You must carry your certified diving licenses and any other
diving licenses with you, in order to dive. If you want to rent equipment and go
on a tour, they will ask for this license.
Snorkels: It is ok to swim near the coral reef but try to stay away from
getting too close to it, lots of people get bitten, stung and cut by fish and
sharp coral.. Look but don't touch ok.
And it is forbidden for either divers, swimmers or snorkels to wear
sunscreen/tanning lotion in many areas like parks and reefs as it leaves oils
(even waterproof stuff) and will kill marine life and coral, NO EXCEPTIONS. Best
to wear a t-shirt.

Chichen Itza and Uxmal are a few hours away in Yucatan, and there there are
lots of tour buses with daily departures. If you don't feel like the long
drive however, Tulum is located in Quintana Roo, which is an ancient Mayan
city right on the Caribbean Coast. There are beaches here as well. Only
problem is that unlike the Yucatan sites, tourists in Tulum are not allowed to
climb on the pyramids.

underground rivers, beaches, dolphins (swimming with the dolphins is NOT
included in your entrance fee and like I said before, it will cost you an arm

from 8:30am to 5:00pm. April to October: Monday to Saturday 8:30am to 10pm.
Sundays from 8:30am to 6:00pm. Children under five years free.
And be careful of tour agencies, one couple was offered the same package for
104 USD!! However, Xcaret offers it's own tour in a fully air conditioned folk
bus. The bus departs every day at 9, 10 and 11am from their terminal located
across from Plaza Caracol next to the Coral Beach hotel. Your ticket includes
your entrance fee as well as Xcaret at Night. If you just want the night time
feature, the tour bus leaves at 3:30pm. They also sell a package to Xcaret and
Tulum, the bus leaves at 8:15am. No reservations are required only that you be
at the terminal 30min before departure time.
One tip from some Chat board friends:
Xcaret is cheaper on Sunday, so visit on Sunday. You can take bus #1
or #3 downtown. Get off at the bus station. Then you can take a bus to Xcaret
with only one stop at Playa del Carmen. The bus will drop you at the park
entrance and a shuttle will be there to pick you up in five minutes or so. The
park did close earlier on Sunday, 5pm. The shuttle will take you back to the
park entrance and the bus will be there around 5:15 or so. We got lucky and an
empty bus deadheading back to Cancun gave us all a nonstop ride for only 10
pesos.
My wife and I visited Xcaret over Thanksgiving weekend 1996 and it cost us $56
for both of us versus $104 via a tour company. Have a good time. Your kids
will really enjoy Xcaret.

Puerto Morelos
Small fishing village where cargo freights are received with imported goods
for the busy Cancun resort area. Also the Cozumel car ferry transports cars
and trucks filled with imported goods from this port to Cozumel daily.
Isla Mujeres Centuries ago, the ancient Maya declared Isla Mujeres
(Island of Women) sacred to Ixchel, and crude figurines of the goddess of
fertility were strewn about the beaches, where the Spaniards discovered them
in 1517. (Hence the name Island of Women). Over the next 200 years, the island
harbored pirates of every stripe and nationality, one of whom fell in love
with an island girl, building a grand residence in a bid to win her. That
structure is still standing as Hacienda Mundaca and open to the Public. There
are hotels on the island, including great beaches, shopping and restaurants.
Transportation and fun boats leave every day and there are many things to
discover on the island. Check below for shuttles and above and below for
things to do! (All things pertaining to isla will be marked with the name. The
rest are of Cancun)
El Garrafon National Park (Isla Mujeres)
Located on the southern part of the island, El Garrafon is a natural park that
houses a collection of coral reefs and marine life. Its natural formations,
protected by the topography of the area, are the home of thousands of species
of land and marine flora and fauna. There are showers, lockers, equipment
rental, food and beverage services and some shopping spots. There is also a
museum and some hiking trails. At this moment, this is a plan it yourself
excursion. Take a water taxi or boat to isla mujeres (look below at some of
the fun boats).
Turtle Farm Isla Mujeres

6oz to 600lbs. Aquarium, Gift store.

Dinner Cruises are becoming quite common in Cancun -- but most of the time
they are themed parties with great dinners. Dress is usually casual with no
high heels. Some may not be appropriate for children due to the amount of
people that get drunk. It is best to ask the cruise what they reccomend.
Dinners usually give a choice between lobster or steak and some fish and
chicken for cheaper prices.

I have had word of several tequila boats that depart from various hotels and
circle their way around Isla Mujeres. One boat is especially cool because you
will only pay about 50 pesos and you can have all the tequila shots you want
for 2 hours. But these aren't the only fun you can find in Cancun. Try pirate
ships, lobster dinner cruises, steamboats, tequila of course and just your
normal transportation boats. They go to all sorts of different destinations
and I have heard that the pirate ships even have a war!

Rancho Loma Bonita
Many people want to have a romantic ride on horseback on the beach. Well up
until this day it has been illegal in Cancun, in order to preserve the
beautiful white sand beaches. You don't want your kids or yourself playing in
horse poop do you? Well 49 km south of Cancun is Rancho Loma Bonita. Here you
can take a 2 hr romantic ride on the beach, play donkey polo, indulge in a
snack and it includes transportation.
Exact cost I'm not sure of, but here is the number:
87-54-65 and 87-54-23
Fiesta Ecuestre (Rancho del Charra)
-- Mexican Rodeo Show -- Includes Transportation (hotel to ranch to hotel)
Dinner buffet of Mexican dishes, open bar for domestic drinks, Mexican
equestrian show, cockfights (without razors!) Folkloric singers, live mariachi
music and some surprises.
E-mail Fiesta Ecuestre or talk to your
travel agent. It is not located far from Cancun.
There are many popular places and night clubs around Cancun where you can
dance, party and drink. The ones that I know of are:
DadyO's and Dadyrock (joined together) La Boom, Fat Tuesday, Up & Down,
Señor Frogs and Batacha (Salsa). Christines, Cat's, Coco Bongo
These are all dance clubs with bars and admission will vary. Entrance into
Dady'O costs about 150 pesos, drinks included and Fat Tuesdays has some
interestingly named drinks like "Sex on the Beach," so all of them
have different atmospheres to them. Take your pick. Some of them have closed
since I was last there, which is too bad, but there will always be more.
Just ask your hotel if you want an accurate list.
The Hardrock Cafe, and Hollywood Cafe
Famous themed restaurants and bars with a little Cancun fun included.
Usually fairly expensive.
The All Star Cafe
A sports restaurant and bar with big screen TVs showing the latest sports
games. Great for a sport enthusiast and many great sports names have come to
visit this particular restaurant.
Hotels
Some of the various hotels have bars, and dance clubs, or nice restaurants
but I unfortunately don't have a list. Maybe later.
