Australia, island continent located southeast of Asia and forming, with the nearby
island of Tasmania, the Commonwealth of Australia, a self-governing member of
the Commonwealth of Nations. The continent is bounded on the north by the
Timor Sea, the Arafura Sea, and the Torres Strait; on the east by the Coral Sea
and the Tasman Sea; on the south by the Bass Strait and the Indian Ocean; and
on the west by the Indian Ocean ......
....so says Encarter 96, but Australia is a lot more than you will read in any reference
book, it is a land as diverse as any on earth, with some of the most unique and strange
creatures, flora and scenery to be found anywhere in the world, not to mention the
people, from the Aboriginals to the newly arrived immigrants, Australia is a remarkable
country.
I could hardly hope to scratch the surface of what this beautiful island continent has
to offer, but I hope what I present you with in these few pages will only encourage you
to find out more about the great place in which I live.
