Nestled in the heart of Singapore's civic and cultural district, Chijmes is a monumental project unmatched for its location and ambience. Chijmes, with its rich heritage and unique architectural style, houses bars, cafes and restaurants offering flavours from around the world and specialty shops.
Originally a convent school destined for demolition, it took almost five and a half years of painstaking conservation and construction work to retain much of the magnificient architecture and transform the site into its present form - a plaza of fine food and beverage outlets and themed retail shops. A spacious lawn, long covered walkways, lovely open spaces and lawns, sunken Fountain Courtyard and an awe-inspiring Chijmes Hall inspires one to get inquisitive and delve into the historical heritage of Chijmes.
HISTORY: WHAT LIES BEHIND THE CLOISTERED WALLS?
The history of Chijmes is a marvellous mosaic. It reveals so beautifully that love does, in fact, conquer all. Its odyssey from struggling convent school to resplendent living history was never easy, but then most worthwhile endeavours are anything but. Find out how a Frenchman, Father Nicholas Barre, born in Amiens in 1621 decided to dedicate his life to God and how he founded the orphanage and school that became home to many children.
CHIJMES HALL
Built in 1902, Chijmes Hall is the piece de resistance of Chijmes and has been declared a National Monument in Singapore. You will be astonished by the magnificent stained glass windows, which remain the main attraction of this neo-gothic chapel, originally the convent's chapel.
CALDWELL HOUSE GALLERY
The first building of the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus has also been gazetted as a National Monument. Find out what the inscriptions say in this former sewing room of the Mother Superior.
THE ORPHANAGE
Built between 1860 and 1890, the building once housed many orphans. Here you can find out why there were smiling Buddhas positioned above the archways of the building.
