Since 1859, orchids have been closely associated with the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The products of the Gardens' orchid breeding programme, which began in 1928, deserve a place where they can be displayed in their full splendour. The very design of these orchids is, one could say, 'hand-crafted' by the Gardens' horticultural staff, dedicated to bringing out the finest in any hybrid cross.
Over 1,000 species and 2,000 hybrids are now found in the Gardens' collection, and every year, more vibrant and enduring hybrids will be added on. So that all may admire and enjoy their diversity, richness and beauty, the National Orchid Garden now offers a permanent showcase, the largest display of orchids in the world.
National Flower of Singapore vanda Miss Joaquim
Chosen to be the National Flower of Singapore in 1981, this exquiste orchid was discovered by Miss Agness joaquim in her garden in 1893.
Orchidarium
The Orchidarium is where most of the wild orchids displayed in the National Orchid Garden are to be seen. Despite generally being less showy and free-flowering than the cultivated orchids, the wild ones often have delicate and intricate blooms.
Burkill Hall
Built in 1866, this colonial bungalow is an excellent example of tropical architecture. Once home of the Gardens' directors, the hall is now used to host VIP events and other functions.
Yuen-Peng McNeice Bromeliad Collection
Over 300 species and 500 hybrids of these highly exotic and most unusual plants from Central and South America are housed here.
VIP Orchids
This collection features a select group of orchid hybrids named after visiting State Dignitaries and VIPs from within and outside Singapore.
Orchid Terraces and Water Features
Three hectares of orchid terraces are enlivened by tropical foliage and water features such as the Crane Fountain and the Tiger Orchid Fountain.
Tan Hoon Siang Mist House
Set against a backdrop of tropical foliage and cultural decor, a host of rare orchid cultivars from the Gardens' collection is displayed here.
Cool House
The Cool House encloses a montane tropical forest. Trees and rocks are draped with a profusion of spectacular orchids and fascinating carnivorous plants. The cool air, drifting mist and rushing torrent provide a highly realistic representation of high elevation sites in the tropics and make for an unforgettable experience.
