Career History

Desktop Support Analyst

December 2002 – present

Employed as a contractor by Synstar at Whitbread Court, Dunstable and at the Laurel Pub Company. Providing 1st and 2nd line desktop support in person and by remote control to strict SLAs. Also responsible for daily backups and application support and 1st/2nd line server diagnostics and network diagnosis/maintenance.

IT Support Manager

March 2000 – December 2002

During this period, I worked at a busy commercial airfield comprising both military and civilian elements and handling mostly VIP passengers. My job involved liaising with customers and management to assess their requirements and then to provide the equipment, software and support to enable them to work effectively.

I implemented the setting up of a new company network to connect over 110 users to a national Intranet. To achieve this, I configured and maintained the system’s servers and developed a standard workstation configuration. I also trained technicians of other trades to carry out the configuration of the workstations and user accounts. At the same time, I provided desktop support for network and standalone systems and software. I installed several mini networks for training and personnel use.

IT Support Manager/Maintenance Supervisor

1998 – 2000

Supervised a team of four technicians responsible for the maintenance and operation of electronic warfare systems and was responsible for the maintenance of the department’s IT systems. Implemented modification of the equipment to provide computer control and telemetry output for analysis elsewhere. Also maintained a departmental network used for maintenance and repair tracking and general administration.

Earlier Career

1981 – 1998

Served for 22 years in the Royal Air Force. Initially employed as a radar technician with responsibility for maintaining various radar and display systems to component level. On promotion in 1986, responsibilities increased to cover shift management, responsibility for amending and updating technical publications, and general and technical administration. In addition, I qualified as a Cat C+E (HGV1) driver and acted as a convoy commander.

Additional posts were as a deputy shift supervisor responsible for maintaining high power HF transmitters and as a team leader responsible for maintaining and operating two tracked vehicles in an electronic warfare training environment. This required adapting two ex-Soviet vehicles to UK standards for Heath & Safety and incorporating telemetry and communications to interface with the existing organisation. Considerable self-training and ingenuity was required as the equipment was entirely labelled in Russian and the team was required to carry out a range of mechanical, electrical and electronic maintenance in addition to driving and operating the equipment.
