Before beginning my career as an amateur photographer, I played the bass for a well-known Irish rock group...
However, artistic differences with other members of the band led to my leaving to pursue a career of my own, which is why the above photograph never made it onto the cover of The Joshua Tree.
Well, to be serious, I do not have all that much to tell. As you can undoubtedly see, two of my hobbies are photography and travel. In addition to the pages already here, I hope in the future to include other destinations, as time and money permit. I also hope to eventually complete the narratives that I've already begun on this site, but I have to admit that the process has taken far longer than I initially imagined it would.
In addition to pursuing travel and photography, I play the bagpipes and other Celtic folk instruments. I also continue to study the Chinese language, Eastern history and culture in general, and Buddhism. These days I spend a lot of time reading, and for exercise I like to go hiking and to throw boomerangs now and then. And I still drink way too much coffee.
I was born in 1967, and I am originally from Annapolis, Maryland, on the Chesapeake Bay. I was educated at the College of William and Mary, in Williamsburg, Virginia, though I also spent some time at the Beijing Language Institute (now known as the Beijing Language and Culture University) and Middlebury College in Vermont. This actually makes me a bit of a black sheep, because my grandfather, father, and younger brother all went to the University of Michigan. However, since "Bill & Maude" isn't exactly a football power and I was raised on Wolverine football anyway, we don't have any family conflicts on Saturdays.
When I am not traveling (most of the time, actually), I live in Western Maryland, with my wife Gale and our daughter. Raising a kid means that completing this webpage is going to be a slow process, but I still find a bit of time for web design and image processing, and wrestling with Windows ME (haven't times changed since everyone worked in DOS?). I also pass the time surfing the Net and dreaming about warm nights beneath the tropical moon....
Space limitations make it impossible for me to upload more than a small fraction of my photography. However, as time and disk space permit, I will continue to expand this page. I have been to many places that I have not written about here, and I certainly plan to travel more in the future, so there is plenty that I can add to this site. Please check in once and a while and see if I've actually followed through, ha ha!
As I said on an earlier page, I welcome any comments, advice, hints on where to find cool web sites, and alerts about any broken links on my page, so if you want to, send e-mail!

One last matter: I almost hate to include this, but since so many people have asked, I think I had better. No, I wasn't really a member of U2. I just thought the picture above looked like something that might appear on the cover of one of their albums. Here is a more recent photo of my wife and me.
