Botany Bay - a harbour named by English botanist Joseph Banks for its many new forms of vegetation - was the site of Captain James Cook's first landing in Australia on April 29, 1770. Now known as Kurnell, Captain Cook's landing place is a public reserve on the south side of Botany Bay.
