Designed for Walt Disney World's older "kids", Pleasure Island is home to over 20 trendy nightclubs, restaurants, and shops. Contrary to popular belief, it is not named after the sinful island in Pinocchio. Instead the island has it's own story. According to Disney legend, it is named after Merriweather Adam Pleasure who moved to the island in the late 19th century to build sailboats. In 1941, after he left his boat business to his two sons, he was killed on an adventure in Antartica. Unfortunatley, by 1955, the business on Pleasure Island was run into the ground by poor decisions and frivolous spending. It was then hit by a hurricane and left deserted, until Disney uncovered it and turned it into the entertainment complex that it is today. The impact this story has on Pleasure Island is that each of it's buildings reflect some part of it's fictional history. The nightclubs on the island are comprised of: The Comedy Warehouse, where hilarious improvisational acts are put on five times a night; 8Trax, where you can dance to music from the 70's and 80's; the Pleasure Island Jazz Company, where you can listen to live jazz from the 1930's to the present; Mannequins, where you can dance to contemporary music with some amazing lighting and special effects; BET Soundstage Club, where you can dance to jazz, rythm and blues, soul, and hip-hop, with occasional live performances; the Rock N' Roll Beach Club, where you can dance to live bands playing rock from the 1960's to the present, and play billiards and other games; the Wildhorse Saloon, where you can dance to new country and even take dance lessons; and the Adventurers Club, the most imaginative club at Pleasure Island, modeled after the paneled libraries and elegant salons of exclusive 19th century clubs. It is packed with adventurous knick-knacks from around the world. Hilarious acts are put on here nightly by some interesting characters. Click on the above link for much more information. Other entertainment at Pleasure Island, includes the West End Stage, where live bands play nightly and the Late-Night Street Party, a New Year's Eve-type celebration that is held nightly with fireworks, confetti, and street dancers. Shops at Pleasure Island include Avigator's Supply, Suspended Animation, Music Legends, Island Depot, Reel Finds, Superstar Studios, DTV, and Changing Attitudes. They sell clothing and accesories, jewelry, compact discs, movie and television memorabilia, Disney animation art, etc. For food, the clubs serve snacks, appetizers, and drinks, and there is also The Portabello Yacht Club, the Missing Link Sausage Co., D-Zertz, and the Wildhorse Saloon. They serve grilled meat and fish, pizza, pasta, seafood, many varieties of sausage, steak, ribs, sandwhiches, pastries, candies, ice cream, etc.
