Shops: There are shops on both main street and Market street, ranging from those featuring things kids like (the Big Store) to Grand Hotel gift shop, Maeve's Arts and Antiques, and art galleries. Many of the stores carry the same items, so shop around a bit. Specialty shops like Maeve's will have items that you won't find anywhere else.
Restaurants: Plenty of them, most are decent. They range from Ty's and other hamburger places to the Island House, Iroquois, the Chippewa, Mission Point, and The Grand. The Grand has a great buffet lunch, plenty of food, desserts and you get to sit on the porch and watch the lake afterwards. (There is an admission fee to non-guests, but it is deducted from the buffet price). There are other restaurants and shops in the hotel (Carlton's Tea Shop - sandwiches, soups, beverages; Jockey Club at the golf course; Geranium Bar). All Grand Hotel restaurant prices include tip.
Our favorite restaurants are The Village Inn (tortellini marinera, nachos, french onion soup, chocolate suicide cake), the Pub Oyster Bar (steak bites), The Tearoom in the Fort (great view, food done by the Grand, have to visit the fort to go the restaurant), and Woods (near Stonecliffe, also a Grand Hotel restaurant, hearty meals). We also like the Pilot House in the Lakeview Hotel and have been told Tidewater and Yankee Rebel are good. If you need a good cup of java there's J.L. Beanery, on the water at the east end of the marina. They have coffee, espresso, cappuccino every day, great hot chocolate, plus bagels, cookies, brownies, light lunch items. Beverages are good size. They also sell coffee related items.
