Here is one letter (second of two) that I sent someone who posted a
question about Cancun on rec.scuba last Sept. (She had been there before
but was asking about what others had done). My first letter mentioned that
we stayed at the Club International, about half way out on the land that
extends east from the city. The sea is north and the lagoon is south. I didn't
care much for Cancun (much too developed and tourist oriented for me).
But I did like CI, mostly because it had sunfish sailboats and bicycles that
came with the rooms.

The north facing beach was calm and the water great for the sunfish. I
could sail out half way to Isla Muhares. There is a bile path extending from
the city out to the east end (Royal Something Hotel) and then is goes south
for a little way and ends. I would not have liked staying south of the path
as then I could not walk to other places very well. Also the east facing
beaches were very rough, with big waves.

I didn't know about the bikes before I went, or I would have brought a lock
to lock the bike at some of the hotels and stores so I could walk around.
My wife and daughter both enjoyed the bikes and sunfish too.

I did several dives, and they were unusual in that they are the only ones I
have done in strong currents. A group of about 6 would all backroll in
together and be carried by the current. The boat would follow the bubbles
and pick up divers as they ran low on air and surfaced. You could barely
resist the current by swimming, so it was just go with the flow. Interesting,
but I would not go out of my way to do it again.

The snorkeling at the park on Isla Muhares was worth doing. Below is the
second letter.

If you do go to Cancun again, here are some more things I liked (besides
biking around and sailing the sunfish). I wanted to see Mayan ruins.
Chichen Itza is a long trip and although it is (was?) a big city, I took a
much shorter bus trip to Tulum. Tulum is a more interesting place I hear-
not big but where the Maya priests lived.  On the way was a stop at a place
pronounced "shell HI" (but spelled with X').  Very interesting snorkeling
there. Fresh water layers over the salty sea water to give a strange blurry
view. The only other place I have been that is similar is near Hilo in
Hawaii. (you need a facemask to see it).  It was a worthwhile side trip. jim
