Not everyone chooses to hitch for rides on the world's largest island.

Because there is so much of nothing in between anything, the waits can be long and not without dangers.

The Track is long and straight; the only road from Adelaide to Darwin.

On the other hand, an attempt to thumb it around the continent saves you money, and you gain more of an insight into the local character, than any guide book can give you.

The Hitching in Oz experience
goes a little like this
:

Let's take Melbourne as the starting point, although many prefer to choose Sydney:

"I won't hold it against you that you're a pom!" Stewie cries out, as his clasp nearly breaks your hand. "Tom tells me you're going to Queensland. I'll give you my brother's address."

The open hospitality one receives is genuine, and spontaneous.

In the mid-twenties Celsius of early November, a red-costumed Santa is already making promises to little children; as the songs of Yuletide ring out around the air-conditioned shopping-centres, and the casual shopper subconsciously buys.

How strange to think of Christmas
on the beach!
