Independence in the distant republics

has meant a return to religious practices and national identity.

Central Asia
is a different world from anything remotely Russian.

When it's snowing in Moscow and St.Petersburg, Spring has almost past in Uzbekistan --

and in Tajikistan, the summer is about to make it's mark.

Street Of The Tombs

Ancient Samarkand hardly seems to be in a rush to join the 20th Century, let alone the 21st.

Horse and carts still transport passengers from the bazaar to the big chaykhana teahouse.

The old mosque is in need of serious repair, but the patient Uzbeks continue to pray in little groups at the end of the Street Of The Tombs; young children too.

There is no need for a loudspeaker to call them to prayer,
the spirit of their ancestors is enough
.
