Dear Em,

Well it's been 5 weeks since my only daughter left home for lands afar. The one thing I had secretly dreaded, actually happened.

You always wanted to travel, and by a stroke of luck, so did Ian and Martin. Why not together!

So, my pretty, cheeky, bright, funny, devilish, lazy (tis true!!) friendly (when not in a mood!!), caring little girl, had her long blond locks chopped off, and left me very tearful on my front doorstep on January 20th 1996. We agreed I would not go to the airport as we would not handle that very well, would we Em?

Anyway, if you get to read this, I hope all is well with you and the boys, and that you are taking care. I'm trying very hard to save (not as easy as you'd think!), so Dick and I can visit Aussie later in the year. Your letters are brilliant, and I love the way you describe things. Keep them coming, although I know it's hard. Remember, you always know where we are, but we don't really know where you will be!

We both miss you very much, and the family all send their love, and constantly ask after you.

So......lots of love to you, we'll be here when you're ready to come home. In the meantime, I look forward to your next call/letter, and seeing you later in the year. (Don't leave it too long between calls!).
