The Cape West Coast is in complete contrast to the Cape Peninsula. The land is flat and sandy with a few rising hills, but every year within two months of good rains, wild flowers bloom, bringing the whole coast to life. Birdlife is in abundance and tasting the abalone, crayfish, mussels, calamari, oysters or linefish of the area is a great culinary experience. The region's towns include Darling, Dwarskersbos, Hopefield, Langebaan which is at the heart of the West Coast National Park, Mamre, Paternoster, Saldanha, St Helena Bay, Velddrif, Vredenburg and Yzerfontein. The oldest known footprints of a modern human which have survived were made 117,000 years ago at Langebaan Lagoon. They were discovered here on a sandstone ledge in 1995.
The natural beauty of Jacobsbaai, its perfect setting, rocks, coves and true West Coast architecture creates an ambience smacking of the romance of an untarnished Greek isle, but remaining absolutely authentic West Coast!
The wee village offers, safe bays for canoeing and the launching of boats, incredible rocky features within the sea, a kilometre long white beach and natural Fynbos, including a wildflower spectacle annually.
Wildlife such as duiker, steenbok, jackals, tortoises, and birdlife, so abundant it makes for eternal viewing during migration seasons, is also found.
To get to Jacobsbaai one must follow the R27 from Cape Town (120km). Turn left at the Saldanha turn-off (R79) and travel to the Saldanha/Vredenburg intersection(11km). Cross over onto a gravel road to Jacobsbaai.
