School
Looking over Tumon Bay, St. John's School is an independent, co-educational, college preparatory day school enrolling students from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. Found in 1962, by interested parents with the assistance of the Episcopal Bishop of Hawaii, the School initially opened with 78 students in Kindergarten through Grade Four, but a week later its building was destroyed by Typhoon Karen. Reopened with tents provided by the United States Marines, St. John's School continued classes a week later and added Grade 5 and Grade 6 to meet the local emergency. In 1963, Grades 7 and 8 were added, and Grade 9 was incorporated in 1964. In 1986, the decision was made to develop a full high school program and Grade 10 was added in the fall of 1987. The first senior class graduated in the spring of 1990.
Philosophy
Underlying the entire program at St. John's School is the belief that the personal relationship between teacher and pupil must be fostered as the key of learning. It is from this relationship that identity replaces anonymity; that skill, knowledge, and genuine affection for learning are acquired; and an atmosphere of accpetance, encouragement, and love is engendered. The educational process at St. John's School is organized with a view toward developing full and proper self-expression, guided by trained and empathic instructors, and tempered by discipline that comes from intellectual application. The curriculum is designed to insure that St. John's graduates can enter and do well at the most selective colleges and universities.
Campus
The campus is built on 7.2 acres overlooking Tumon Bay and is equipped with modern facilities: 5 science laboratories, a learning resource center with 30,000 volumes, art studio, music studio, gymnasium/performing arts center, and athletic fields.
