Also called the Emerald Island, Andaman & Nicobar are the two main islands among the string of 300
islands lies in the middle of the Bay of Bengal. Nearly equidistant from Kolkata, and Chennai, these
islands are constituted as the Union Territories of India in November 1956. Stretched over 500 miles of
coastal lines, the islands are mainly divided into two groups, Andamans and Nicobars, separated by the
ten degree channel.
From tourism point of view, these islands have immense potentials. The clear waters and white sandy
beaches, the volcano, the coconut trees, green forests make Andamans a perfect tropical paradise. The
Andamans are surrounded by shallow coral reefs which can be seen through the glass bottomed boats. Free
of filth as well as unpolluted fresh air attract any nature-lover, who seek absolute peace and tranquility
in the lap of mother nature. Adventure tourism like trekking, island camping, snorkeling, scuba diving etc.,
are the memorable lifetime experience for the tourists.
Since Prehistoric times, these islands were the home of aboriginal tribes. The tribes of the Andaman
group of islands are the Great Andamanese, Onges, Jarawas, and Sentinatese, all of Negrito origin, while
the tribes of Nicobars are the Nicobarese and Shompens, both of Mongoloid stock. Some of the tribes are
not civilized and not friendly for any visitor at all. That is why, some islands are not open for the
tourists.Barren volcanic island is one of them, Visitors can go there but can not disembark.
Port Blair is the administrative headquarters of islands. Marco Polo was the first foreigner to visit
these islands. Marathas had captured these islands and remained in control till the death of Maratha
Admiral Kanhoji Angre in 1729. These islands were captured by British forces in the 19th century. Then
the infamous 'Cellular Jail' was established here. In this jail Indian freedom fighters were kept, many
of which were executed or killed. During world war II, the Japanese captured these islands and were
planning to make it their base to attack Asian countries. But the Britishers and the local tribes
organised guerrilla attacks on them. Finally these islands were incorporated into the Indian Republic in
1947.
