Common Name: Fulvous fruit bat

Almost half the size of the famous flying fox, this fruit bat is uniformly light brown with or without a yellow tinge. Head and body is 12.5 cm long; the tail is 1.8 cm long; and forearm 7.2 to 8.6 cm. The eyes are large and ears are short.

The distribution is rather limited to the forested areas, places having old dilapidated buildings or ruins. Although uncommon, it has been found over wide areas. It lives in colonies, prefer dark places-a habit opposite to the flying fox. A huge congregation is found in the Kudum Cave, near Whykeong forest beat office of Cox's Bazar FD.

The largest flying mammal of Bangladesh, with large eyes; reddish brown head, sometimes with very dark, even black, snout; nape and shoulders brownish yellow; remaining portion of the back is dark brown to blackish; underside yellow brown; wings slaty. Head and body 23 cm; wingspan 122 cm; weight 600 gm.

The species has a wide distribution in the country, it lives in big congregations, several hundred to couple of thousands on one or a couple of neighbouring trees. Frugivorous and nocturnal, can move freely at daytime also.

Rather small, mostly dull grey brown fruit bat with widely separated nostrils; almost hairless long ears having white margin are characteristics. Head and body 11 cm, tail just 1 cm; forearm 7.5 cm. Males have chocolate brown to reddish collar.

Seem to be common and widely distributed. Often found in Dhaka city being mobbed by crows at dawn. Lives singly or in small numbers among dead palm leaves, tree hollows, etc.

Sexually dimorphic insect-bat; males with yellow tinge; females brown washed with red ; males have beard of long thick hairs. Head and body 8 cm, tail 2.5 cm and forearm 6.5 cm. Its common and widely distributed, prefers to live in small colonies in dark places or inside abandoned buildings.

One of the largest tail-less insect-bats commonly found all over the country. Its a slaty greybat with pale underparts; unusually large ears rounded and united for more than one-third of the length; nose-leaf with blunt square cut end. Head and body 8.5 cm; forearm 6.5 cm.

Next to flying fox, false vampire has the widest distribution in the country; found in the cities, countrysides and forests in equal abundance; live in large congregations in old forts, unused tombs and ruins.

Possibly the smallest mammal of Bangladesh, if the pygmy shrew is excluded due to the latter's uncertain occurrence in Bangladesh. Usually dark brown; underside paler; nose tip to eyes naked; forehead and crown thickly haired; ears very large subtriangular with rounded tips. Head and body 4.5 cm, tail 3.5 cm, forearm 3 cm.

Its very common over the entire country and is the commonest of the microchiropterans. It lives both in the cities, villages and forests. The pipistrelle lives singly or in a small family party of 3 or 4 in the same room on the rafters, ceilings and other wooden frames of tin-sheds, cattle-sheds and outhouses; often enter into the dwelling houses in quest of insects and after hawking insects for sometime disappear on its own.

A yellow bat with a wash of grey; grey head, a tuft of whitish hairs at the base of the ears, long wing with a 3rd phalange on the 3rd f inger. Head and body 6.5 cm; tail 5 cm with free tip; forearm 5.5 cm. Common and widely distributed throughout the country.

A dull yellow brown bat with more yellow on the dorsal side and brown on the underside. Head and body 7.5 cm; tail 5 cm ; forearm 6 cm. Uncommon but may be found over the entire country undoubtedly common in the coastal belt; from the Sunderbans in the West to St. Martins in the east.
