These are pictures from our first visit to the Horn Farm.

August 1999 Remember, this is winter here in Chile.

We are standing on top of a pile of lumber. You can get an idea of the terrain by looking at the background. The farm is located in a valley south and west of Santiago.

Our host and hostess: Franz and Maria Elena are ready for our horseback ride.
Do you see the leg protectors they have strapped on?

Artie on his horse with the young trees, some of the children,
and the mountains in the background.
Margy is ready to ride. Anastacia is a wonderful, gentle horse. All she needs to do to make her slow to a walk is to say "SHH." This is important to know, since Margy hadn't ridden in at least 10 years!

Margy is holding the handcarved stirrup that is typical on a Chilean saddle. The saddle itself was a pure delight. It was large and comfortable and padded with two layers of sheep's fleece. They are designed to be comfortable for an entire day in the saddle, but she was glad that she didn't have to ride all day!
