Some Highlights of Bibba and John's Visit March 15-25, 2000 |
|
The day they arrived, I took them to see the crafts at Los Dominicos. We also shared some typical Chilean foods
there for lunch. Here, we see them ready to enjoy some more fine food at a local restaurant, with outdoor courtyard dining. Joining them and Artie for lunch is Viviana, from Oxy Chile, who arranged a tour of a local jewelry factory. This craftsman is making oval pendants from lapislazuli. Bibba bought a silver necklace that can be also used as a bracelet and a pin that can be also used as a pendant. Artie brought home a copper box for me. I will go and see the factory another time. I'm looking forward to shopping there! |

Sampling the best of Chile's wines! (many times)

We all went on a driving trip north of Santiago. Afrter a stop in La Laguna, along the coast, we happened upon a circular stadium where a Rodeo was going on. We stopped to take some pictures of the colorful horsement outside, and we ended up going in to watch for a few minutes. Later, when we read about Chilean Rodeos in the guide book, we were pleased that we had almost figured out what had been going on in the competition. It is quite different than an American Rodeo! |

Pottery town: Pomaire Near the end of the visit, Mónica went with us to Pomaire, a small town that is entirely devoted to pottery and serving the people who come there to buy it. The dark brown pottery is used throughout Chile for cooking many typical Chilean dishes. Other colors of pottery are now made and sold in the town, since the original clay deposits have been depleted. |

Before shopping, we had a wonderful lunch. Artie enjoyed a traditional "Pobre" (poor) chicken. This treatment of beef, fish or chicken is anything but poor! It always includes a generous serving of fried potatoes, onions and eggs. Thus fortified, we had a great time in this shopping meca.
Craftsmen were visible, rapidly creating their pots. |

On the morning of Bibba and John's departure, we invited Mónica, Gustavo and María José for
brunch. Earlier in the visit we had gotten together several times, including dinner at their house. One evening
they even took us to the used book store belonging to a friend of theirs, so that Johnn could select some rare
books for his Riverow Bookshop. For more pictures from their visit, click on Crossing the Andes. |
