Scenes of Cerro San Cristóbal |
We have taken many of our visitors to Cerro San Cristóbal, so we have numerous pictures taken on this hill.
This page will tell you more about this part of the city. One pretty Sunday morning in July, our winter here in Santiago, Artie and I took a long walk from our new apartment on Carmencita. Along the way, we enjoyed this view of the our own World Trade Center (at right) and other pretty buildings, as we made our way to Cerro San Cristóbal. |
The top of San Cristóbal is the highest point in the city. The entire hill is a park that is and has been enjoyed by the people in Santiago for many years. Readers of the books of Isabel Allenda may remember reading about outings in the park.
There are numerous ways to get to the top. Many people simply walk or bike up, but one can also go by car, taxi or bus, or ride either the funicular or the teleférico. Normally Artie and I drive or park at the bottom and walk part way up, and once took the Funicular that runs up and down the 45° slope on tracks.
This day we took the Teleférico, gondolas suspended from cables high above the hillside.
The views, along the way and at the top can be spectacular, especially when it is clear. The hill is crowned by a Santiago landmark, the large statue of the Virgin Mary.
In September, we began riding our bicycles to the park. We haven't used them many times in the two years since we bought them, but we are getting into better shape with them. We hope to make it to the top of the hill one of these days!
At times, we have participated in yoga classes in the park on Sunday mornings.
We have also seen some group sessions of aerobics and Tai Chi in the park.
There are several beautiful gardens in the park, the zoo, a restaurant, a chapel, a sanctuary, several shops for souvenirs, snack bars, a restaurant, and numerous nice lookout spots. Cerro San Cristóbal is certainly a wonderful resource for the people in Santiago. |
