The Story of Margy's Guitar Continues...

Arrival of Margy's Guitar

On June 9th, 2002

Nicanor Oporto, the luthier, brought me the guitar he had made for me. Its arrival had been delayed for several reasons, including the record breaking rainfall earlier in the week. We all watched expectantly as he removed it from the case and gave it to me.

Look inside!

Cristián shows the name plate inside my new guitar to his girl friend, Antonia. "Margy" is the name of this model!

Here are some more illustrations of Nicanor's fine craftsmanship. He told us that it took him 3 days to make the name and hearts. They are carved from a seashell and laid into the wood. He also commented, "never again" in Spanish, of course.

Cristián tuned it, and played a bit, tuned it some more, played some more, retuned it, and played more. It takes a while with the new strings before they will hold the tuning. We were all impressed with the sound. Even though the body is smaller and thinner than the one on Artie's guitar, the sound is better. It's as though there is a speaker inside. The notes are sustained longer. This is a professional guitar, with 20 frets, rather than the 19 on Artie's guitar. I don't know that I will ever get to the point where I will use them all, but it's nice knowing that it is possible.

Cristián puts the guitar to the test by playing beautiful music
After Cristián put it through its paces, I tried playing two of my songs, following the music, since I've only managed to memorize one of them.

Artie, Antonia and Nicanor all played.

Nicanor played too

We drank champagne to celebrate!   Installing a button on the Baroque Guitar
We celebrated the event with Chilean champagne, before Nicanor added a button to the bottom of the Baroque guitar that he had made for Cristián in 2000.

  look of delight

Helga, Nicanor, Cristián, and Antonia gathered around my computer to see the webpage, "Margy's Guitar" and the digital photos we had taken while they were here.
It's been great capturing these memorable moments in our lives and being able to share them with our friends here and around the world.
