When Pat and Dave Visited...

7 - 21 February 2001

Early in their visit, we all flew down to Puerto Montt in the the southern part of the lakes district of Chile. That afternoon we went for a tour of the Gelymar plant, which processes seaweed into food additives. Gelymar is a subsidiary of Oxiquim, one of Oxy-Chile's customers. This was especially interesting for Pat, who is a registered dietitian as well as an avid gardener.

The next day we took a ferry to the island of Chiloé, known for its picturesque houses on stilts and characteristic churches. Many of the buildings are clad in wooden shingles in a wide variety of designs, thanks to the German heritage of the people who settled this area. We enjoyed the first of several kuchens in the park at the left.

Our vist to Frutillar was a highlight of our trip, with these exquisite views on an absolutely perfect day!

Pat and Dave stayed in the south for a few more days, driving the rental car across the Andes to Barriloche, Argentina. We admired their bravery both in driving across the mountains and driving alone in two countries after having had only a few weeks of Spanish lessons before their trip.

After they returned to Santiago, we showed them the ski resort Valle Nevado, the beach at Viña del Mar as well as our city.
