25th September 1999: Our First Chilean Wedding We were invited to the wedding of the son of Artie's secretary, Verena. The wedding was held in the early afternoon in a delightful canvas roofed church, complete with trees growing up through carefully fashioned holes in the canvas. Around Margy are Artie's co-workers Carlos, Carolina and David with their spouses. |
Verena is greeting Laura and Dave Logan. Dave is the financial manager at Oxy-Chile. By coincidence, we knew them when we were living in North Carolina, where Dave was the plant controller and Artie was plant manager at Castle Hayne. |

The musicians were delightful during the mass. We recognized the melody of the first song during the mass as "Amazing Grace" although the words were all in Spanish. |

There were about 300 people at the reception in the church hall. The dark "pillar" on the left is the trunk of a giant palm tree, growing up through the canvas roof. |

Another Chilean wedding that we attended after this one began quite late at night, which is the custom for nighttime weddings. We were ready and at the church before 9, but that wedding didn't even begin until nearly 10 o'clock. Following the wedding mass was a reception at the Prince of Wales Country Club. Artie and I left at 3 AM after we had seen some others leave, but we learned from the mother of the bride that they were there until 5 AM! It is interesting to note that these events are the religious weddings. Both couples had already been married in civil ceremonies for more than a month. Until the church wedding, however, they do not live together. This is the norm in Chile. |
