| Like the Great Ocean
Road to its east, the far southwest coast too is extremely
rugged, windswept and was treacherous for shipping in the last century.
The towns on its coast were once whaling stations. In Warrnambool,
the Flagstaff Hill Maratime Museum has restored port buildings from
the era and a history of the coast. Further west, tiny Port Fairy,
has a rocky island where thousands of mutton birds live. Portland
has many historic bluestone buildings, which adds to the cold windswept
feel of the town.
Flagstaff Hill Maratime Museum This museum in Warrnambool with restored buildings from Australia's early days shows the colonial Australian way of life, whaling, navigation and shipwrecks on the treacherous south coast to Melbourne. The working museum is excellent and as good as the more well known Sovereign Hill in Ballarat. Well worth visiting. Where to Go Next The Grampians National Park is north of Warrnambool. To the west through Mt Gambier and along the coast is Adelaide. Travellingeast along the Great Ocean Road
takes you to Melbourne.
